  • Another small update...
    Fri, 1 Aug 2008 04:08:00 GMT

Hey everyone. I've been getting quite a few e-mails this week asking if we'll be at Otakon next weekend. With the way gas prices are and the ridiculous cost for hotels in Baltimore, I'm afraid we won't be making it this year. However if your going to be at the Providence Anime Conference in October we'll be there. If you haven't heard of PAC it's the first ever 21 and over anime convention. This is pretty intriguing to us, so if your planning on going drop me an e-mail and maybe we can meet up for a beer or three.

I know it's been a full two months since I promised a return of podcast episodes, and I still haven't delivered. To be honest I've been pretty busy and just haven't felt motivated to produce any new episodes. I've been kicking some ideas around for a new run of shows though, so expect something before too terribly long.

In the meantime, would you like to win a 16GB iPod Touch? If you take this short audience survey by August 30th, you will be thrown into a drawing courtesy of my podcast host Wizzard Media. I don't normally like pushing these things on you, but I figured this is a pretty cool deal since these iPods are pretty sweet (and expensive). So CLICK HERE to take the survey. Thanks and good luck!

Thanks for hanging in there with my lameness, and thanks a lot for your continued support!

  • Still alive.
    Mon, 2 Jun 2008 02:03:00 GMT

Hey all. Just wanted to post a quick update and let you know that I'm still alive. Been pretty busy these last couple months. Went on vacation, went to a con, and have just been generally busy with life stuff.

Look forward to a new episode soon though detailing our excellent time at Anime Punch this past April in Columbus, Ohio. Some of you long time listeners may remember that we attended this con back in 2006, but skipped 2007 since we were saving up for our trip to Japan. 2006 rocked, and 2008 was even better. This may very be the best anime convention around. Seriously. We'll tell you all about it real soon.

In the "welcome to 8 years ago" category, I started myself a blog. There will be some anime and Japanese content, but for the most part it will be an outlet of sorts. So if your going through withdrawal, surf on over to schnuth.com.

Thanks again for hanging in there, and I'll be talking to you all again real soon.

    Aaron

Episode 70 - Town Of Evening Calm, Country Of Cherry Blossoms
    Wed, 9 Apr 2008 18:37:00 GMT

This episode I take a look at the manga Town Of Evening Calm, Country Of Cherry Blossoms. Joining me on the review is Eeeper of the Eeeper's Choice Podcast. Eeeper actually sent me this manga in to review, and is a good example of how to get me to review something. :) It's a great manga, and seems to be overlooked like most great manga these days. Enjoy the review!

WARP Vidcast #2: Look At My Eva!
    Thu, 20 Mar 2008 20:00:00 GMT

Here is another attempt at me doing a video cast. I think it actually turned out pretty decent, but you be the judge. I take you on a tour of the Evangelion Memorial Theater laserdisc boxset. The Japanese have a knack for putting out insane (and insanely priced) collector's sets, and this one is no exception.

This episode I do what most lazy unprepared podcasters do, read your e-mail! I've been playing a lot of voicemail lately and have been neglecting all your great e-mail, so we start correcting that in this episode. I also take a look at some news including the upcoming live-action Akira movie, and some strange individuals in Japan. Don't forget to keep those e-mails and voicemails coming in, I always love to hear from you. The voicemail number is 206-339-9277 in case you forgot.

  • Bronchitis is not fun.
    Mon, 4 Feb 2008 01:34:00 GMT

Really it isn't. I don't recommend getting bronchitis at all. But unfortunately it's what happened to me last week. I was hoping to get a podcast up this week, but that may not happen. I'm pretty much better now but I still have some coughing going on. You really don't want to listen to me cough my head off since that doesn't make for good podcasting. So there might not be a show this week. Just wanted to let you know I haven't fallen off the face of the Earth again. :)

WARP TV: Nissin Ramen, The Manliest Ramen Ever!
    Tue, 6 Nov 2007 21:12:00 GMT

Hey all. I just wanted to put up a quick post to let you know I'm still alive. The podcast should be returning soon, but here's a little something to watch in the interim. A year or so ago I downloaded a torrent consisting of nothing but various Japanese television commercials. I've been rather intrigued by these so I thought I'd post up some of my favorites. Formatted for your iPod so you can waste time at school, work, or your next proctologist exam.

This has to be the manliest instant ramen noodle commercial ever. I think it could only get manlier if Kenshiro from Fist Of The North Star would team up with Nissin to create a even manlier version. But I'm afraid that will never happen.

Speaking of manly men, if your needing a Aaron fix you can listen to me on episode #115 of Most People Are DJs. I'm not talking about anime though. Instead I chat with Mikel OD about a Henry Rollins spoken word show I attended. If they ever made a live action version of Fist Of The North Star, I sure hope they would cast Rollins as Kenshiro.

Enjoy the commercial, and let me know if your interested in seeing more of this sort of thing.

    Aaron

Hello friends.  I'm a liar, really I am.... and I'm sorry for it.  According to the title of the podcast I'm supposed to get shows out WEEKLY.  I haven't been living up to that promise for awhile.  As you can see I haven't released a podcast in over a month.

Just to let you all know everything is fine in my little corner of the world.  But thanks for all the e-mail inquiries, I do appreciate them as always.  It seems that I've hit a wall with podcasting.  I still like podcasting and of course I still love anime, but I'm afraid I'm starting to burn out a bit with getting the podcasts out each week.  Unlike other podcasts this is a one man affair, meaning that I do the whole thing myself.  While this has worked out fine in the past, lately it's just been too much.  So to let you know I'm putting the podcast on hiatus.

You can expect the final Japan Trip cast to show up before too long though.  We still want to talk about our adventures in Akihabara, and our day at the Studio Ghibli museum.  Both of which were absolutely amazing.  These episodes have been a bit experimental and haven't been ordinary WARP podcasts.  I wanted to try something different, and I think these were a nice change of pace.  The response has been really positive, so thanks for everyone who has stuck around during these out of format episodes.

Speaking of format that is something I want to change once WARP starts back up.  I do still want to change the name of the podcast eventually, and start concentrating on Japanese pop-culture as a whole instead of just anime.  You know other things I love about Japan like movies, TV dramas, video games, music, etc.

Thanks for subscribing and sticking around for the past two years.  What started out as a way to get myself to watch my ever growing queue of DVDs (and to justify the college education I'm still paying off) has led to so much more.  Thanks to this podcast I've made many friends and have had experiences I wouldn't have had otherwise.  For those reasons alone I don't want to end the podcast.  So the show is going on hiatus, and one day soon it'll be back better then ever.  So why not stay subscribed since you'll never know what might come down the old RSS feed.

    - Aaron

Since DeepDiscountDVD screwed me over good last year, I refuse to pimp their semi-annual DVD sale. Instead I want to call your attention to a great deal going on at RightStuf.com.

In response to DDD's sale RightStuf has brought back their nutso Geneon DVD sale. I got in on this late last year so I missed out on some stuff, which I picked up in this sale. From a special list all Geneon DVD are 10 for $50, and 25 for $100 (US funds). If your in the US you also get free shipping.

Lots of great titles are included in this sale such as: Serial Experiments Lain, Paranoia Agent, Captain Harlock, Master Keaton, New Getter Robo, Hajime No Ippo, Tetsujin 28, and lots more. At $4 a disc you can't go wrong.

The sale runs until June 27th so go check it out. I'm not getting anything from this plug, I just wanted to pass along what I thought was a killer deal. I know I could sign up for their affiliate program, but I'm just too lazy. ^_^

Episode 52 - Back In Business
    Fri, 23 Feb 2007 08:25:00 GMT

Hey fools, I'm back from the dead. Be sure to listen to this episode to find out where my lame ass has been. Also we hear some great listener reviews, do some e-mail and voicemail, and just have a old fashioned good time. The above image is my first fan art ever, and I forgot to mention it on the podcast. Ugh! Much thanks to Tsakura from Tsakura's Wataame Podcast for sending it in. Also listen past the end of the episode for a special voicemail from Amy. It didn't really fit in with the rest of the show, but it's still pretty cool so I wanted to include it. It's good to be back!

WARP Vidcast #1: Anime Punch 2006
    Tue, 30 Jan 2007 08:44:00 GMT

May I present to you my newest grand experiment, the first ever WARP vidcast. This is a collection of video footage that Diana and I took last March at Anime Punch. Anime Punch 2006, the Armageddicon, took place March 30th to April 2nd, 2006 in Columbus, OH. It's taking place again this year on the very same weekend. So if you like what you see in this video podcast, do yourself a favor and plan on attending. It was my favorite con that I attended last year (and yes I am including Otakon).

Among the things you will see in this video are: highlights from the always awesome "Your Favorite Anime Sucks!" panel, Joshua Seth voice actor/hypnotist making virgin otaku men believe they are giving birth, the incredible Spoony Bards rocking the joint, as much of the masquerade as we could stomach (I did tape more but no one used the microphones), and more con hijinx and hillarity that you can cram into 30 minutes.

The video file in the feed is formated to play on iPods or in iTunes. I know some of you don't use either and so I uploaded the video to Google Video. I know I say it's on YouTube in the podcast, but at the time I didn't realize how restrictive they were on file size.

This is the very first ever video I've edited so please keep that in mind. Diana was a lot of help in putting this thing together, and I couldn't have done it without her. So if you don't like it, it's her fault. ^_^ Also there are a variety of different colorful words used in the video. So this podcast has the honor of being the first to carry the explicit tag in my feed. So it's safe to assume this probably isn't safe for work. I hope you enjoy this, and as always, all feedback is welcomed.

    Episode 51 - Perfect Blue
    Mon, 22 Jan 2007 02:07:00 GMT

I want to apologize for the lack of a podcast for the past month and a half. I've been a very bad podcaster. But I've been dealing with some personal issues and haven't been in the podcasting mood. Don't fear however. The podcast is not dead, and will be coming back real soon.

Here's a little something to tide you over. I was sent in this great review of Perfect Blue by C2 Anime Reviews. Those of you who have been listening for awhile know that I have shown my love for Satoshi Kon in my reviews of Tokyo Godfathers and Paranoia Agent. This film is no exception and is one of his more well known works. Enjoy the review, and you should be hearing more from me soon.

Also, Podcast Pickle has reset everyone's favorites at the beginning of 2007. If you could add WARP to your favorites at Podcast Pickle again I'd really appreciate it. I'd also like to thank whoever added WARP to Digg's new podcast directory. I haven't asked for any diggs and there are over 70 right now. Thanks a lot for your continued support!

  • Quick update.
    Sun, 17 Dec 2006 04:27:00 GMT

Since I haven't had the time to put out a podcast in the last couple weeks, I wanted to post real quick about who won the last contest. I'd like to congratulate Dave from New Jersey who not only won a brand new Fullmetal Alchemist The Movie DVD, but also got a t-shirt as well!

If you remember I played a short montage of 5 different anime songs in episode 50. To be included in the drawing you had to identify all 5 of the songs. If you weren't able to get all five, here they are:
    • Melissa by Porno Graffiti. This was the first opening theme for Fullmetal Alchemist.
    • Konya wa Hurricane by Kinuko Oomori. This was the opening song for the first episode of Bubblegum Crisis.
    • Tank! by the Seatbelts and composed by Yoko Kanno. This was the opening theme of Cowboy Bebop.
    • Tobe! Gundam, the opening theme from Mobile Suit Gundam (First Gundam).
    • Cruel Angel's Thesis, opening theme for Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I really thought these wouldn't be too hard but most of you got stuck on the Gundam and Bubblegum Crisis tunes. I thought the Gundam one was the hardest, but not too hard since I reviewed Gundam in the same episode. Thanks for everyone who entered, and stay tuned to the podcast for future contests for more anime DVDs!

Speaking of the podcast you might have noticed that I haven't put anything out in the last couple weeks. With the holiday season upon us I've been really busy with work, life, and some personal stuff. This is the busiest time of year at my job since I work for a shipping company. So I might not put out anything new until next month.

In the meantime don't forget to stay subscribed via iTunes, add WARP to your favorites at Podcast Pickle, drop me an e-mail at weeklyanimereview@gmail.com, or better yet leave a voicemail at 206-339-9277 to get yourself on the podcast.

Thanks to everyone who has supported WARP this past year, and I look forward to bringing you more anime podcasts in 2007!

This week I read through some listener feedback. I've been pretty bad about this lately, so hopefully this will help correct things a bit. I always love hearing from you guys so keep the e-mail and voicemail coming! We're also treated to another C2 Anime Review, this time for Porco Rosso. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the podcast this week! It's always appreciated, and there wouldn't be a podcast without all your support.

Be sure to tune in to this episode as well for your chance to win the first volume of the new Armored Trooper Votoms DVD as well as a Weekly Anime Review T-shirt. Thanks again to E. Berhard Warg for donating the DVD!

Okay so I forgot to mention what the clip in the beginning of this podcast was. It's none other then Rym & Scott from the Geeknights podcast. I meant to make a funny about their comments on us from SITAcon, but I forgot. Sorry about that fellas.

This week's podcast is a little shorter then normal due to having to get ready for SITACon this weekend. Instead of skipping a week I'm running a listener review since we haven't done one of those in awhile. Hans, a listener from Austria, was nice enough to record and send in a review of Hellsing. He has an interesting take on this anime and manga, and I hope you like his review. Regular reviews should be back next week assuming I'm not too worn out of hungover from the con. ^_^

This week I take a look at one of my favorite shonen comedy series Great Teacher Onizuka, more commonly referred to as GTO. I also read some of the entries from the Castle Of Cagliostro DVD contest and pick a winner, and bring you all sorts of other tasty anime goodies.

It you visited the site in the past few days you would have noticed that the new WARP T-shirts are now available. These come in white with the classy Weekly Anime Review logo in Navy Blue. This is a test run to see just how well they will sell, so if you want one be sure to do it sooner then later. Shirts are only $10 shipped inside the US, and slightly higher outside the country. What a bargain!

The last couple podcasts I've been telling you about how I'm going to be a guest at SITACon next month. If your able to make it be sure to stop by and say hello.

Also this week I feature the first part of a three part feature which takes a look at the Works of Mamoru Oshii. A big thanks go out to Kellin Winslow who was nice enough to submit this piece. This part looks at the beautiful Angel's Egg. We also play some voicemail that came in this past week. Remember if you want to be part of the podcast, hit the voice mail at 206-339-WARP.

You now have until Spet. 20th to enter the Castle Of Cagliostro DVD contest. Last week I only received one entry. That's right only one!
