Learning to Land Safely. I spent today's entire lesson practicing pattern work and landings, flying a tighter formation, now that I've got the basics down. Learning the Pattern. This week, we agreed to meet on Thursday, and the weather was great. The winds started out calm, increasing to winds between 5 & 10 knots. Today's lesson was exclusively on pattern work. I practiced staying on centerline during takeoffs, making smooth 15 degree turns, maintaining proper altitude, and remembering each step in the pattern. I flew a wide and long pattern today, to give myself time to prepare each leg, and to get more time to setup for a good landing. This helped me a lot... - Flying Reports Podcast - Episode 11

Substitute Instructor. I decided to head over to Front Royal airport, since I hadn't watched the gliders before. The airport manager was there, and suggested I could fly with another instructor, if he was willing. I wasn't sure how my instructor would feel about this, but the owner assured me it was OK. So I introduced myself to the instructor who was there, and he agreed to fly with me when he was done with his current student... - Flying Reports Podcast - Episode 10

Flying With a Friend Again. I went flying again with my friend who owns a Seneca Piper. He's the one who got me started at this. There were reports of icing over our destination in North Carolina... He filed IFR flight plans for today's flights. Lesson 6 - First Cross-country. As we climbed, my instructor let me choose which direction to go, and I wanted to visit an airport we hadn't been to before. Lesson 5 - Stalls. Once at our practice area, I got to perform power-on and power-off stalls. Lesson 4 - Weather Briefings. Prior to today's lesson, I called 1-800-WX-BRIEF to obtain area weather conditions for flight. I told him I am a student pilot, and informed him of my plane's tail number, model, where I planned to fly, time, duration and elevation of my planned flight. He presented a general overview of the weather, with specific information on winds, temperature, dew point, etc. I attempted to write it down, but there was too much for me to copy down so fast... - Flying Reports Podcast - Episode 5

Lesson 3 - Which Runway? We approached a nearby airport in Winchester VA, and I asked how one would go about landing there, so he had me make a radio call. Since winds were calm, it wasn't clear which runway they would use, so I asked and was told to use Runway 14. However, there was incoming traffic from the north... - Flying Reports Podcast - Episode 4

Lesson 2 - Importance of Fuel. It was still below freezing, and winds were gusting between 10-15 MPH. I arrived before my instructor and the owner told me I could head out to the plane to begin my pre-flight inspection. I unlocked the plane, took out the checklist, and began the checklist. I removed the control lock, a device which locks the yoke in place, preventing movement of the ailerons and elevators. I switched on the electrical power to check instrumentation, and found both tanks appeared to be low in fuel... - Flying Reports Podcast - Episode 3

Lesson 1 - First Flight. I was quite excited on the first day, and ate a light breakfast, concerned about how my stomach would react. It was below freezing, and winds were gusting around 15 MPH. Before heading out to the plane, my instructor spent some time going over an outline of my training, with a checklist of the skills I'm expected to learn. He also went over basic cockpit instrumentation, using a model at his desk. With safety high on my mind, I asked questions about... - Flying Reports Podcast - Episode 2

First Trip To The Airport. I found my way out to my local airport, and pulled off the road to watch planes takeoff and land. There isn't much traffic at Front Royal's airport, but I got to see some activity. One plane had its engine running, sitting near the runway. Eventually, it turned onto the runway and took off. A short while later, it came back and was about to land when it accelerated and went back into the air. They came around again, and practiced this maneuver several more times. Eventually, they landed and parked the plane... - Flying Reports Podcast - Episode 1

Flight With A Friend. I've thought about flying all of my life. In high school, I learned about the theory of flight in my high school's AFJ-ROTC program. But for various reasons, I never did followed-up and learn to fly. I guess I thought it was out of reach due to the expense and perhaps the risk. My wife has always given me 'that look' whenever I talk about doing something she considers dangerous...
