- Rip Current Awareness
Sat, 06 Sep 2008 00:55:30 EDT National Weather Service Rip Current Awareness.
In an effort to heighten public awareness of rip currents at surf beaches, NWS Break The Grip of the Rip(TM).
Rip currents are powerful currents of water moving away from shore. On average, more people die every year from rip currents than from shark attacks, tornadoes, lightning or hurricanes. According to the United States Lifesaving Association, 80 percent of surf beach rescues are attributed to rip currents, and more than 100 people die annually from drowning when they are unable to escape a rip current.
Rip currents can attain speeds as high as 8 feet per second. This is faster than an Olympic swimmer can sprint.
When you arrive at your favourite beach, speak with on-duty lifeguards about rip currents and all other water conditions expected for the day.
In support of its vital awareness campaign, NWS has developed the following educational tool available from Aruntx Newswire,

- Microsoft Windows Vista
Sat, 06 Sep 2008 00:55:30 EDT Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) plans six core offerings of its upcoming Windows Vista operating system, targeting how people use computers instead of PC hardware specifications.
The world's largest software maker plans three offerings aimed at consumers, two at business users and a stripped-down edition for emerging markets. Unlike the current Windows XP, there will no versions designed specifically for advanced 64-bit computing, multimedia computers or Tablet PCs.
"We're delivering the exact same number of offerings as in Windows XP, but the big difference is that each of those offerings are targeted differently with a different set of features," said Barry Goffe, director of Microsoft's Windows client product marketing.
Windows Vista, due out in the second half of 2006, is the much-anticipated upgrade to Microsoft's flagship product. Windows, which is found in about 90 percent of all computer desktops, is also one of Microsoft's earnings cash cows.
The company, which accidentally posted some details of the Vista product lineup on one of its Web sites earlier in the month, has promised that Vista will feature improved security, simplified search across the desktop and a cleaner interface.
Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft expects Windows Vista Home Premium to be the mainstream consumer product, allowing users to record and watch high-definition television, burn and author DVDs and perform other multimedia functions.
It also incorporates Tablet PC technology to decipher handwriting to let users write notes on the computer.
Vista Home Premium will be the middle option for consumers, sandwiched between the high-end Windows Vista Ultimate, which also includes business-oriented features, and a bare-bones Windows Vista Home Basic without the multimedia capabilities.
For business users, Microsoft plans Windows Vista Business for small and medium-sized businesses that may not have a information technology support staff.
Windows Vista Enterprise will be aimed at large, global companies with encryption features to protect information even if a computer is stolen and tools to enable compatibility with applications designed for older operating systems.
All the versions for consumers and businesses are available for both 32-bit or 64-bit computer systems. Sixty-four-bit processors can crunch twice as many bits of information at one time as the more prevalent 32-bit processors.
Microsoft will also offer a version of Vista Home Basic and Vista Business without a Windows Media Player in Europe to comply with European Union antitrust rulings.

- Arbitron Reports Satellite Syndication Ratings
Sat, 06 Sep 2008 00:55:30 EDT In a illustration that more consumers are turning to alternative distribution platforms for their radio listening, Arbitron will begin to report satellite radio listening as part of its syndicated ratings surveys beginning with the Fall 2005 survey, the ratings firm said. Arbitron will also include a radio station's Internet audience in the station's ratings estimate, beginning in Spring 2006.
All satellite radio channels will be eligible, but only those channels that garner enough audience to meet minimum reporting standards, will be included. In lieu of call letters, satellite radio channels for XM Satellite Radio will begin with the characters "XM" and the call letters for Sirius channels will begin with the characters "XS" followed by the channel number.
The listening audience to a terrestrial radio station's Internet stream will be included in the ratings only if the online content duplicated 100 percent the programming of the on-air station, including the commercials. In the Winter 2005 survey, about 0.05 percent (five out of every 10,000) of quarter-hours of listening recorded in diaries was to a radio station's Internet stream.
Currently satellite radio listening has been included in the overall persons using radio estimates, but not broken out by channel. In Fall 2004, Arbitron announced satellite radio appeared in about 1.2 percent of all diary entries. Since then, the number of satellite radio subscribers has grown to reach 6.2 million today and forecast to reach 9 million by the end of the year.

- Apple: Small Number of IPod Nanos Flawed
Sat, 06 Sep 2008 00:55:30 EDT Apple: Small Number of IPod Nanos Flawed.
When Apple introduced the iPod Nano four weeks ago, the "impossibly thin" digital music player took enthusiasts, industry analysts and the Internet by storm. But not in an entirely positive way.
Some early purchasers complained loudly, mostly on the Internet, that their sleekly designed portable music players suffered from several annoying shortcomings: namely, color display screens and cases that were easily damaged.
One iPod Nano owner, Matthew Peterson, even set up a Web site, flawedmusicplayer.com, to highlight the problems he and some other owners were experiencing with their new players, and what they said was Apple's slow response to their concerns.
Apple says it will offer iPod Nano owners with broken screens a complete replacement unit free of charge.
Apple, however, isn't being so generous in terms of players that are merely scratched.
Stating that the company has received very few complaints about nicked Nanos, An Apple spokesperson suggests that customers should consider using an additional protective case to preserve their stylish players.
"I am very delighted to see Apple take this issue seriously," says Nano owner Peterson on his Web site. "This was a real issue and most people tried to ignore it."

Using content created exclusively by listener podcasts, the station, KYOURADIO launched May 16 on Talk KYCY AM in San Francisco and streamed online.
Although several radio stations, such as Bonneville Internationals WTOP-AM in Washington, D.C., have offered up hour-long podcasts of select programming, Infinity is the first group in the United States to embrace podcasting as the foundation for an entire format the company is calling Open Source Radio.
Your original thoughts and sounds may be broadcast in San Francisco on the revolutionary 1550 KYCY AM and streamed worldwide.
The stations producers will screen submitted content to ensure it meets quality standards and does not violate FCC broadcast guidelines. Approved podcasts will be simultaneously broadcast over the AM airwaves and streamed online at KYOURadio.com.
Infinity moves even deeper into the new medium by announcing it will offer free daily podcasts from its nine news stations, with flagship WINS Radio 1010 New York set to lead the way in July.
"We are increasingly living in an on demand world, where listeners want to receive our award-winning content via alternative means," Infinity CEO Joel Hollander said in a prepared statement. "Podcasting, while relatively new, is being adapted by more and more users everyday, and is a perfect complement to our business model."
In addition to WINS, Infinity's news stations include WCBS-AM New York, KFWB and KNX Los Angeles, WBBM-AM Chicago, KCBS San Francisco, KYW Philadelphia, WBZ Boston and WWJ Detroit. Those stations began streaming their programming in March.
Infinity Broadcasting Corporation, a division of Viacom, is one of the largest radio broadcasting companies in the United States. The company, headquartered in New York City, owns 183 radio stations in the nations top 50 markets that reach tens of millions of listeners every week, many of which are in the nations top 10 markets.

- Big Time Over Something Of Nothing
Sat, 06 Sep 2008 00:55:30 EDT Manufactured news is everywhere. That is, news that is really not by definition news, either because of its irrelevance to each of our personal lives or the well-being of the nation. This, of course goes on all the time, otherwise there would be no need for the vast array of public-relations firms.
The problem arises when this aspect of sensationalism and ratings-driven news takes over what the nation deems is important.
The mainstream media continue to grasp for America's attention and they are doing anything they can and going way below the standards of journalism in an effort to garner the ratings they need. How long will it take for us to look back on these days and realize that the hype of entertainment-news went way too far and led to a degrading industry?
The demise of the mainstream media has long been heralded by conservatives and this week has been a testament to its slow death. The mainstream media is filling its primetime news slots with irrelevant fluff news even while there are urgent problems around the world that could be helped by investigative reporters. It's quantity, not quality that makes the air on major market media. Fortunately, this is a free market, and the bad decisions of today's mainstream media are making the success of tomorrow's new media.

- NAB Keynote: Verizon's Seidenberg Promotes IPTV
Sat, 06 Sep 2008 00:55:30 EDT "FiOS will change the competitive landscape in the video marketplace, both now and in the future. From Day One, we will offer a new technology, a new business model and a new customer experience," said Ivan Seidenberg, the chairman and CEO of Verizon, speaking at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference in Las Vegas. So far, Verizon has deployed its fiber-to-the-premises network in more than 100 communities across its service territory, and it plans to reach a total of three million homes by the end of this year.
Seidenberg is convinced that consumers will prefer the flexibility and integrated lifestyle enabled by IPTV. He said Verizon would offer more local content than cable or satellite. It will also provide upstream speeds will give customers multimedia and interactive capabilities such as sharing family videos, video on demand, 3-D gaming and setting camera angles for sporting events. FiOS TV will also offer HDTV and DVR (digital video recorder) functionality on multiple TV sets. Seidenberg said he is committed to protect intellectual property in a digital universe, specifically that Verizon will help broadcasters address retransmission issues in ways that expand the market for both the company and the broadcasters.
Seidenberg also said that Verizon is committed to partnering with broadcasters on the policy issues related to Verizon's entry into video. Citing the requirement that Verizon obtain a franchise from local authorities to provide cable service, Seidenberg noted that, as a local telephone company, Verizon has always had a franchise to deploy and operate its networks. Now, he said, the company is being asked to obtain a second franchise to use these networks to compete in video.
While continuing to negotiate local franchises, he said, Verizon is seeking statewide solutions in some jurisdictions as well as a federal solution to this issue.
"We ask you to lend your persuasive voice in support of clearing away this barrier to video competition and speeding the day when America's communications companies can use our fantastic resources to offer your content and provide a true and compelling alternative to cable," he told the broadcasters.
