  • EBOOK REVIEW: Kids Business Ideas
    Fri, 09 May 2008 16:57:23 -0500 Author: teenbizideas@yahoo.com (DGB)
On the podcast last week I mentioned a new product, Kids Business Ideas, that TeenBiz listener Tessa Smolinski created. A couple days later Tessa emailed me a copy of her book to check out. To say I was impressed would be an understatement!

Kids Business Ideas is full of a lot of really, REALLY solid stuff. Tessa really has the entrepreneurial spirit and mindset.

I can easily see how someone could flip through this book and say, "man, there's nothing really new..." but they would be wrong. If you decide to give this book a try, take it slow. Chew on each idea for a few minutes and let your creativity explore the possibilities. Print out a copy and make notes on the book as you go. Do this and you WILL finish with a fat list of high-potential businesses you could start very easliy.

The only downide I saw was the formatting. It was a little bit difficult to follow simply due to the text formatting but I talked to her about it and it sounds like that is not permanent and it will be all snazzy very soon.

Check out the Kids Business Ideas website.

  • Exclusive TeenBiz Access to Sendside Beta!!
    Tue, 08 Apr 2008 10:19:14 -0500 Author: teenbizideas@yahoo.com (DGB)
Sendside, THE next generation of email (100% secure and ridiculously powerful) has released their Beta version by INVITATION ONLY! Seriously, go to their site and try to join...all you can do is request a membership and hope they pick you...seriously.

TeenBiz has secured approval for exclusive Sendside invitations which we will start sending out on Thursday, April 10, at 4:00pm ET.

So what does it take to get an invite?

Send an email to teenbizideas@yahoo.com and put the word "Sendside" in the Subject line. We will offer invitations on a first come first serve basis...so don't dilly dally.

Once you have an invite all you have to do is click the link in the email for instant access to Sendside's powerful, beta version of what is geared up to possibly be the biggest thing since Google...no joke. Talking with one of Sendside's investors the other day he said that investors everywhere all green with envy that they are not on board this big-time project.

TeenBiz: The Course v1.0 was good, but it we really want to set a new standard. Version 2.0 is going to rock and fit the needs of student entrepreneurs in some really cool ways. Right now though, we need to know what YOU want so that when you crack open v2.0 for the first time, you smile big and say "this is exactly what I needed." There is a little poll in the sidebar that will help us understand what you are looking for. There are only three choices...it will take you less than 10 seconds. Thanks guys...you rock!

As alluded to in the podcast SEOMoz.org offers a free, beginner search engine optimization (SEO) course that I would highly recommend. It covers a lot of quality content:

    --Keyword research
    --Building friendly sites
    --Link building
    --Search engine operation

Plus many other topics that are worthy of your time. It will take you about an hour to an hour and a half to go through this (don't skim, print it off and highlight as you go, really study this stuff) and will be one of the more valuable hours spent on your business.

    Keys to Info Product Success
-You don't always have to innovate
-Avoid "how to make money" products
-Stick to things you are good at; unique is good
-Look to the future, see a bigger picture
-Don't leave the website and traffic to the end
-Create the headline first THEN the product

  • Free Stuff: Nice Backlink and $10!

We're getting ready to record the next podcast but didn't want to wait to tell you about a couple bits of juicy info:

First, we have officially started the TeenBiz Student Entrepreneurs group on Facebook. Plus, get a link to your site (no affiliate links please) placed in the right column of the TeenBiz Podcast site when you:

    1) Join the TeenBiz Student Entrepreneurs group on Facebook
    2) Are one of the first 10 people to post your link on the group page

Facebook is great for networking, you can start discussions, post links and news, and meet like-minded entrepreneurs to work on ideas with. I am planning on using the TeenBiz Group to meet the graphic designer for my next project!

Second tidbit. Right now if you go to BUY.COM and use Google Checkout to pay for your swag, they will take $10 off your order. I believe it has to be the first time you use Google Checkout with BUY.com to apply. Trey Morris let us know about this one, so props to Trey. He used it to buy "The E-Myth", a book we have recommended many times for student entrepreneurs. Heres the steps:

    1) Go to BUY.com
    2) Look for and add The E-myth to your cart.
    3) Proceed to checkout.
    4) Rather than checking out with BUY.com click on Google Checkout.
    5) Fill in all of your information and go through with the order.

Thats all for now, the new podcast will be coming out very soon. If you haven't done it yet, please use the poll in the right column to tell us what you want to learn about most on TeenBiz in the upcoming months!

  • Don't Settle! You CAN Do It!
    Fri, 11 Jan 2008 13:52:25 -0600 Author: teenbizideas@yahoo.com (DGB)
I received an email this week from an enthusiastic 15 year old TeenBiz listener who wanted to know how feasible it was for him to consider starting a web design business. At the end of his email he said, partly as a joke, "Who knows, maybe I'll just end up flipping burgers in college to make some extra money instead."

Going off of the last podcast, this is one of the things we will face over and over again...settling for the "norm". All your friends work normal jobs, all your friends make $8 an hour, and starting your own business is hard and will take a lot of work. So why try? Because you are different, you can do it, and its worth it. Because this 15 year old is trying and already thinking about his future tells me he has a bright one.

I recently found a video of Steve Jobs' (the guy that helped start Apple and Pixar) giving a commencement address at Stanford University. Towards the middle of his address his said this:

(to watch the video of his entire address click here, to read the transcript click here)

Take the last two words of that quote and carve them into a big slab of rock and mount it by your bed so you see it every night. Don't settle for something you are better than. Simply by the fact you are reading this blog and listen to TeenBiz podcasts shows that you are different, you have a desire to try, and you are way ahead of your peers.

Let me say it again...DON'T SETTLE!

Now is the perfect time to start a business, you have little to lose and everything to gain. Get out there and get started on your business right now. As Warren Miller says, "If you don't do it this year, you'll be one year older when you do."

  • New, Free Productivity Tool - Toggl
    Fri, 07 Dec 2007 11:15:48 -0600 Author: teenbizideas@yahoo.com (DGB)
I had been looking for something like this for a while. An online time tracking program that would help me see where I am spending most of my time and also help me track the time I spend working on design and marketing projects for clients. I found a few, self-hosted systems and pricey options but nothing that really worked for my needs.

Then a week and a half ago I found Toggl, a free, web-based time tracking service.

They aren't paying me to say a word of this by the way, this is something I absolutely needed and their product fit my needs like a glove. Tracking my time has helping me immensely in a few ways.

First, knowing that it is tracking my time for a specific project helps be stay on task and focus on that one project. No more skipping to YouTube every few minutes to watch another vid.

Second, I can look back and see where I am spending all my time and evaluate if my time could be better spend elsewhere. Sometimes, I get into a mode where I don't realize how much time passes, like when I am deep into a site design project.

Third, it helps me break down my "to do" list. Knowing I will be working on one task as a time forces me to break up my list (either in my head or written down) into managable, measurable parts so I can take them one at a time and don't get overwhelmed with all the things I need to do.

We're students, and we don't have a lot of time; tools like Toggl will help you make better use of the time you have.

  • Free Web Traffic and List Building Tools
    Tue, 03 Jul 2007 11:42:33 -0500 Author: teenbizideas@yahoo.com (DGB)
We have received some emails recently regarding the best ways to get free traffic to you site. While free traffic often doesn't convert as well there is one new method you may want to try...

    Instant Buzz Toolbar
Instant Buzz is the brainchild of Mike Filsaime, one of the most trusted internet marketers around. Basically, you put a small bar at the top of your browser that shows a short text ad, every page you visit earns you credits that you can use to have your own ad displayed!

    Traffic Swarm
Similar to instant buzz, another simple way to earn some free advertising credits.

We have also had questions regarding the best way to quickly build your email list. Giveaways (you give away a free product if they join your list) are a common way to get a list quickly started. Some recent ones to join...

    Viral Marketing Giveaway
Brett Ingram's VMG6 is the latest in a long line of quality giveaways.

    Marketing Central Giveaway
Another giveaway you can use to build your list.

    PLR Wolf's Giveaway
Not as popular as the others but still nice.

    PLR Vault Giveaway
We personally used this one with surprisingly good results.

Hopefully these help, if you have any questions, email us at teenbizideas [at] yahoo.com!

We will be talking about the products we have released since the beginning of the year and why they are FREE now (click the TeenBiz: The Course link on the top right to download), the results from that project, a cool new resource to use with your internet business, and much more...
