This episode is from “The Vault”. I routinely have a lot of content that is Apple Related but not really news that never makes it on the show. This episode is a recording of a conversation that I did with Adam Christianson of the MacCast back in June of 2005 where we talked a lot about Apple switching over to Intel CPUs. It’s a good listen. Enjoy!

We’re listed over at BluBrry! Check It Out! - Apple WWDC 2007 Steve Jobs Keynote Presentation
Tue, 12 Jun 2007 06:35:14 +0000Here are my notes on Steves Keynote Speech.
You can watch the video of Steve Jobs giving the keynote here.
Biggest WWDC ever in history of Apple. There are over 5000 developers.
Steve covers a year ago talking about Intel. Switching to Intel was the most challenging and ambitious transitions ever. Apple wants to especially thank Intel. Steve has Paul Ottelini on stage, gives Otellini and Intel team an award. Ottelini says working with Apple is one of the best things to happen to him and Intel.
Games
Electronic Arts
EA is coming back to the Mac. Steve has Bing Gordon on stage. Starting in July, EA will bring its four biggest titles to OS X.
- Command and Conquer 3
- Battlefield 2142
- Need for Speed Carbon
- Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix
- Madden and Golf in August.
ID Software
John Carmack is on stage and gives the first public showing of what they??ve been working on for the Mac. The entire world shown on the screen is covered in unique textures. Game artists can change any texture they want in the game with no impact on the performance or stability of the game. ID has another Mac related announcement at E3, but can??t talk about it right now.
OS X
Mac OS X Tiger is the most successful release so far. There are 22 million OS X users.
Steve wants to give a final look at Leopard before its released on October. There are over 300 new features in Leopard, but Steve wants to talk about the top 10 new features in Leopard.
10 Top New Features in Leopard
- There’s a new Desktop, menu bar, new dock, and Stacks to help clean up desktops. A more consistent window look, and it’s easier to see the active window. There’s a new Downloads folder that works with Safari. Stacks is more of an organizational tool.
- New Finder with a new sidebar for it. Spotlight search in Finder can now search other Macs and servers. It’s much easier to share and browse files between computers. .Mac “Back to My Mac” feature. Finder has Cover Flow like iTunes. Cover Flow lets you page through items without opening them, play videos, look in PDFs, Keynote presentations, etc. Job’s demos and explains “Back to My Mac”.
- Quick Look: Instantly preview files without opening applications. It has full screen preview, plugin support for docs types not supported, etc.
- Leopard is 64 bit top to bottom, from Unix all the way to Cocoa. There will be no 32 bit Leopard and 64 bit Leopard. Just one version that runs both 32 bit apps and 64 bit apps. This will be the first time 64 bits goes mainstream.
- Core Animation. Complements Core Audio, and other Core services. It has automatic GPU acceleration. Rapid Animation Development.
- Boot Camp will be built into Leopard. It will be compatible with Windows Vista and XP. It provides the most compatibility and is complementary to Parallels and VMWare.
- Spaces lets you group your windows together. You can have as many Spaces as you need, and can arrange them however you see fit.
- Improved Dashboard. There are over 3000 widgets for Dashboard. Apple will be supplying a new Movie Times widget. There??s a new Internet widget maker called Web Clip that lets you make a widget out of almost anything on the Internet.
- iChat has better audio quality using the AAC-LD audio Codec. Other additions include tabbed chats, multiple logins, invisibility, animated buddy icons, SMS forwarding, Photo Booth effects, iChat Theatre, and Backdrops.
- Time Machine. Almost nobody backs up their computer automatically. Apple wants to solve backup problems so simply that everyone will use it. New for Leopard, Time Machine backs up everything on the computer. Time Machine can back up to a local hard drive, or to a network drive, or wirelessly over Airport Extreme. All Macs on the same network can share one drive and back up to it. When restoring, you can preview backed up items with Quick Look before restoring to make sure it??s the correct item to restore.
That’s just the top 10 of the 300 new features in Leopard.
Other Items Covered During Keynote
Safari
There are 18 million Safari users on the Internet. About 5% of all users on the Internet use Safari. Apple would like to increase that, so now you can get Safari 3.0 on Windows. Safari 3.0 now runs on Windows XP and Vista, Mac OS X Leopard and Tiger, and also the iPhone. iBench shows that Safari 3.0 on Windows is over twice as fast as IE 7 in most situations and 1.6 times as fast as Firefox.
iPhone
Not much new for iPhone except that now you can develop third party apps for the iPhone using Safari and current Web 2.0 + AJAX standards. There’s a brief demo of what you can do, but otherwise not much else.
Other Items of Interest
Apple appears to have revamped their website.

Sat, 05 May 2007 02:33:54 +0000The Problem With Apple’s Hardware Line - I blogged about a problem I see with Apple’s Hardware Lineup.
- A Greener Apple
Wed, 02 May 2007 21:34:08 +0000Today, Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs wrote a nice letter about how despite what was being said in the Press, Apple was quite Environmentally friendly with it’s products.
He breaks it out into clear and concise sections and does quite a good job of walking the average person through what Apple has been doing to be Environmentally Green and what they’ve planned for the future.
I for one was quite impressed with the depth covered as well as the general open and candid manner in which the issue was discussed.
What I find to be very interesting is that Apple is also looking at their “Carbon Footprint” (meaning how much green house gases they produce through the course of simply existing and conducting business, which contributes to Global Warming) and how to reduce that over time. I look forward to hearing what Apple has to say about what they’re going to do about their Carbon Emissions when they’re ready to say it. Like a growing number of companies out there, it’s good to see that they are interested in and actively managing what their impact on the environment has been, is currently, and will be in the future.
It’s unfortunate that many other companies view that sort of thing as a necessary evil because they are legally required to do so, and only do what they are legally required to do, and exploit as many loop-holes as they can. That sort of minimalist behavior is extremely counter-productive to the spirit of the regulations set in place and irresponsible at many levels.
I think it would be a great thing to see Apple become a world leader not just in technology and industrial design, but also in green processes and tightly controlling their own impact on the world’s environment.
I would love to support a company and own products from said company that is an industry leader in Environmentally Safe and Sound practices, not only in their manufacturing processes, but also in recycling their older products that are now obsolete and in their overall “Carbon Footprint”.
You can read the whole letter here, or download the PDF version here.
Update: I’ve been watching a lot of the postings on the net about the letter, and I’m a little disconcerted to find out that the focus of quite a few people and sites is that Steve confirmed LED backlit displays. You’ve got to be kidding… get your heads out of the geek porn here people! The purpose and the focus of the letter was to let us know what Apple is doing to be eco-friendly, not to drop snippets about new products for everybody to drool over! Talk about missing the point.
