  • Happy Thanksgiving
    Wed, 26 Nov 2008 13:20:32 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
To all my friends and blog lurgers have a good holiday.  I will be taking a break from here to chill and knock back some empty calories, but I'll be back in a week.

  • iPhone Advertising vs. Real World

  • Saw the first-responders this morning...
    Tue, 25 Nov 2008 11:18:54 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
...I was in the southbound lane, running late for work as per usual, when I passed this scene with cars strewn around Lovers lane and Central.   Apparently a lady jumped from the overpass into the northbound lane.  Very sad.

  • iPhone 2.2 Update Is Live

http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/ Biggest noticeable items are: Podcast downloads live from iTunes (no need to dock just to get your Podcast updates anymore) and Google Maps StreetView.   Honestly not a ton of stuff I'm all that stoked about, and Apple STILL REFUSES to put the widescreen keyboard into the Mobile Mail.  Yes there are Appstore freebies that add it, but Apple needs to

  • MOSS 2007 (aka Failpoint Server)
    Thu, 20 Nov 2008 14:18:29 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
Despite the fact that it's en-vogue to pick on Microsoft, I've never been that hard on MS software. It's been part of my livlihood the past 15 years and I know that if you Tweek here, tweek there, and you can make any MS product operate smoothly. Yet in my dorkiest days as an MCSE/MCITP, after having installed nearly every Microsoft enterprise class product, none (and I mean NONE) have been as

  • This Mashup explains the new Trek Movie...
    Wed, 19 Nov 2008 08:01:38 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
Smallville....Small Trek? I hear the new movie has some good ole Red Shirt deaths too...

  • Local music friends
    Tue, 18 Nov 2008 12:03:05 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
My old high-school friend and fellow Richardsonite JD Whittenburg joined this band awhile back, and they just put out a new CD. I'll snag and spin it soon and see what I think. JD posted a link to a review on his blog. Go there and see what Eastwood is all about. Speaking of local musician friends let me re-mention Harvey Barham's City of Champions. As I mentioned here before, Harvey (1/2 of

  • What that new Trek movie is up against...

  • New Trek Trailer Leaked
    Mon, 17 Nov 2008 14:38:14 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
Update: You can see the official trailer here in all its glory. Just saw it here, it will probably get pulled but it's also on Youtube, or here. From the brief flashes of the Enterprise's corridors & bridge, the damn thing looks more futuristic than The Next Generation, let alone departing from most of the look of the original series...which this was supposed to be a prequel to. Hmmm....

  • Windows 2008 R2 will be 64-bit only
    Thu, 13 Nov 2008 14:01:51 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
I completely missed this bit of info from MS last month.  Interesting precedent.  This means all future versions of the Windows won't support 32-bit CPU servers.  Data center budgets may soar, but I wonder what this means for desktops PCs running Windows?   Windows 7 will surely support 32-bit, but Windows 8 may not.

  • 8.2 miles to Better Health...
    Thu, 20 Nov 2008 13:58:16 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
So I started bicycling to work 3 times a week.  For"suit days" (vendor/work meetings or other haps) I'm driving the old Teutonic beast, but for the most part biking is infinitely easier than Dallas rush-hour traffic. I keep mostly to residential streets as long as I can before I get near the DART station, then I hop the train and go downtown.  I never realized how bicycle un-friendly Dallas is

  • I park where they shot Robocop...
    Tue, 11 Nov 2008 10:40:55 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
Okay so every geek on earth knows Robocop, the 1987 movie (director Paul Verhoven did Total Recall & Starship Troopers).  I never liked it much, but if I see it on TV I always like to watch it to spot the Dallas buildings (the first Robocop was mostly shot in Dallas in 1986). Several scenes take place in buildings I've been in like Renaissance Tower and City Hall. An old co-worker working at

  • Next years Cert: CCIE or MCA?
    Fri, 07 Nov 2008 15:25:10 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
As I prepare to sit the CCNP exam by end of year, I'm wondering where to go next. I'm told the CCIE is the next logical step, and as one of the most difficult IT certifications today, it's where a lot of Cisco certified people go. But in developing IT architectures, I work with Microsoft and a host of other Vendors from VMWare to NetApp to Citrix...and so I wonder if the MCA cert is the next

  • FedEx Kinkos are copyright losers...
    Fri, 07 Nov 2008 00:01:27 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
...so I've been fiddling with recording lately, trying to learn some junk and today I bike over to FedEx Kinkos  to drop off my Yammie manual to print so I stop ruining tracks, and I get an e-mail back from them saying: "We appreciate your business, however, because your Yamaha manual contains a copyright notice, we are unable to complete your print request" This, a free downloadable manual from

  • One other thing, Cuban was for Obama?!
    Wed, 05 Nov 2008 12:14:22 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
Wow. It always a bit hard to tell from his various posts, including recent ones on the economic crisis, but Mark Cuban's blog post today revealed that he voted for Obama.

  • I dedicated last night to my 78-year old mom
    Wed, 05 Nov 2008 12:12:03 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
Of all the people caught by this moment, my mom will be the most memorable.  She was in tears last night and never thought she'd see this in her lifetime.

  • Some thoughts for this morning...
    Wed, 05 Nov 2008 08:34:15 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
I work up this morning thinking a couple of things I wanted to add from last night. First, as our 44th Prez said last night, just because we got him into office doesn't mean everything will fall perfectly into place with our economy, dealing with the world, or the other challenges we're dealing with. I am pretty sober about that. Second, despite the facts above, I still feel better about my

  • ** Barack Obama: 44th President of the US **
    Tue, 04 Nov 2008 22:17:49 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
Our long journey has been successful: Barack Obama will be our 44th President. The historic vote count continues into the night, but after Ohio this contest is over. • Yes We Could, and Yes We Did

So far Obama is in a blazing lead, and we're looking at a landslide. Follow-up post to come after it becomes official. History is happening right now with every vote coming in... UPDATE: O-HI-O! Ohio went for Obama around 30 mins ago. My final post for the night up in a bit.

The Associated PressFormer presidential hopeful John Edwards and cyclist Lance Armstrong joined hundreds Monday in Dallas to mourn prolific Democratic fundraiser Frederick "Fred" Baron, who died just days before a possibly momentous election for the party he lavishly helped finance.Mr. Baron, a wealthy Texas trial lawyer who raised millions for Democratic candidates and causes, died Thursday

  • Obama WINS first returns in Dixville Notch!!!
    Tue, 04 Nov 2008 12:48:38 -0600 Author: noreply@blogger.com (Julian)
One of the places I remember passing through on a trip in NH with my first wife was Dixville Notch NH. I don't remember a lot about this little town, but I do remember my that former father-in-law told me how they always tried to vote first in the state, around midnight election day. And he added that they ALWAYS voted Republican. I looked it up earlier in the evening and they reliably voted GOP
