- "Why" video by Lisa Redford
Fri, 03 Aug 2007 09:37:28 -0500
Influenced by singer-songwriters such as Carole King, James Taylor, Neil Young, Chrissie Hynde, Shawn Colvin and Tracy Chapman, U.K.'s Lisa Redford began songwriting after singing with a band at major London venues. She formed and acoustic duo and began performing extensively at venues around the UK. She also made appearances on TV and radio, at the Cambridge Folk Festival, and headlined many successful acoustic showcases, and supported respected songwriters Glenn Tilbrook and Mike Silver. We think Lisa is a very talented performer, but don't take it from us: check out her video for the song "Why." We think you'll be as impressed as we are.

New Weird America
This week The Great American Music Hour spotlights bands and artists who make music that can only be called "New Weird America." That phrase originally comes from the title of Greil Marcus's book about Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes; it was his name for that semi-buried world of often eerie Americana music that Dylan and The Band tapped into. "The old, weird America is a land of juke joints and revival preachers, medicine shows and haunted battlefields?where preachers speak in tongues and tricksters make deals at crossroads." Rest assured the form is not dead. Our 77th show features some new weird American music from folks like the Mountain Pearls, the Wormwood Brothers, The Deacon Brandon Reeves, the Water Callers, Brian Whitson and the Night Wolves, and others. Enjoy the show and be sure and check out The Best Of The Great Amerian Music Hour sampler series on Apple iTunes.

Wed, 09 May 2007 16:49:39 -0500
This week's Great American Music Hour Track Of The Week is "(Don't You Want To Know) The Way It Feels To Lose?" by Richmond, Virginia's Scott Brookman from his brand new album A Song For Me, A Song For You. Scott has been writing and recording tuneful pop songs since the mid-80?s. His new release, A Song for Me, A Song for You, features 14 tracks in styles ranging from bossa nova to jazz/rock to Beatle-esque. Brookman describes his music as an outgrowth of '60s and '70s styles enhanced by modern recording technologies. ?It?s recycling in a good way, a fun way. You still have to know all the music stuff,? Brookman says of his approach, which he readily asserts is rooted in ?classic styles, but with a new spring to them. Pop music is free, it incorporates almost anything. The melody is really the thing.? A Song for Me, A Song for You can be purchased on Apple iTunes or from his website where you can learn more about Scott and his music. So sit back, enjoy a great song, and be sure to tell your friends and neighbors about the The Great American Music Hour Track Of The Week.

This week's Great American Music Hour Track Of The Week is "Ballad Of The Busy Head" by Atlanta, Georgia's High Cotton from their new live album Hanging By A Thread. A recent review said, "High Cotton perform Americana/Folk original music with side steps to Country, Blues and Folk Rock. They are a synthesis of each members' past musical experiences, including, Folk, Jazz, Country, Celtic, Rock, 50?s Doo-Wop and even Storytelling. We'd say they are somewhere between Patsy and U2 and Cash and Coltrane?" Today we present the Nanci Griffith-influenced track, "Ballad Of The Busy Head." - "Splits" by The Dolorama Project
Wed, 28 Feb 2007 12:51:46 -0600
This week's Great American Music Hour Track Of The Week is "Splits" by The Dolorama Project from their new album Subject To Change. Close to a one-man show, the Dolorama Project has been staged by Roeland Dol, an editor who compiles dictionaries by day and songs by night. The Project's album, Subject To Change, contains 14 tracks in various tones and voices, all of which emerged during the recording process. Since love and life don't always lead to happy endings (or seldom without a bit of a struggle anyway), most of the lyrics have a certain weary quality, but it's not all gloomy stuff. Subject To Change can be purchased on Apple iTunes. You can also check out the band's MySpace Page for more information about the music. In the meantime sit back, enjoy a great song, and be sure to tell your friends and neighbors about the The Great American Music Hour.

Fri, 02 Mar 2007 09:13:45 -0600
This week's Great American Music Hour Track Of The Week is "Life Without Fences" by Lee Tyler Post from his album Life Without Fences. Over the past six years, Lee has built a reputation as a road warrior with a blue-collar approach to his music, performing 150-200 shows a year and driving 25,000-40,000 miles annually. He calls his style "Rock N Soul,"and at least one reviewer agreed, describing it this way: ?...Post's sound is as much Springsteen and Van Morrison as it is Otis Redding and Al Green: blue-collar heartland grit mixed with Motor City soul...? His album, Life Without Fences, can be purchased on Apple iTunes. You can also check out his website for more information about Lee Tyler Post and his music. In the meantime sit back, enjoy a great song, and be sure to tell your friends and neighbors about the The Great American Music Hour.
