What a gem. A pleasure listening to all of these variations and remembering where I was (and how young) when Tom Baker introduced me to hallucinogenic time travel. Thanks.

Blitzkrieg Bop (Tom Baker mix) by Electramones
    Fri, 27 Jun 2008 11:43:34 -0800
I seem to send you one of these every year, here's the lunatic backstory for this year's entry:
Imagine an alternative history if you will. A world where the Ramones were not formed on the mean streets of New York in 1974, but on the rather duller, greyer streets of Sheffield in 1978. Their earliest memories are of hiding behind the sofa, terrified of the Daleks and Cybermen, and traumatized by the electronic wail of the Doctor Who theme. School days were filled with the sounds of the Glitter Band, Sweet and Slade, and after finally deciding to form a band they choose to draw musical inspiration not from the Beach Boys, Beatles, Bay City Rollers and 1910 Fruitgum Company but instead from the hot new electronic sounds of The Normal, Cabaret Voltaire and The Human League. Thus they find themselves signed not to Sire records, but to Fast, and as stablemates of the Human League, they need to make a big impact with their debut single. And in just 45 seconds of pure inspiration, 'drummer' Tommy Electramone writes the anthemic 'Blitzkrieg Bop'.
Well, a lunatic backstory justifies a mashup of the greatest punk rock song of all time with the two greatest electronic tracks of all time (Warm Leatherette and Delia's masterpiece). Enjoy!
p.s. truncated to 90 seconds so I can post a 'performance' video to Flickr.

The Missing (Beta) Link by Beta Link
    Thu, 26 Jun 2008 07:01:29 -0800
Yes, I went with a funny remix name. -_-' I didn't spend nearly as much time on this as with The 90s (which should also have been included in the update, if not, then sorry.) and Howell DXi, but I'm still very fond of it. Basically, it's a remake of the 1963 Derbyshire theme, with some nods toward Howell's theme. It was made mostly on GMedia's Minimonsta, which is a VST Mini Moog. The only 2 things I've ripped from any Who theme are (obviously) the scream and sting effects. I was going to make this part of my own rendition of Gold's version, but i just ended up with an "3pic ph4i1". :P But who knows? Maybe one day I'll do something that's actually original and sounds good. Enjoy.

    The 90s by Beta Link
    Thu, 26 Jun 2008 06:15:23 -0800
What if? What if Doctor Who didn't end in 1989 and went into the 90s? Well actually that wasn't my original idea... This actually just came out of boredom when I realized GForce's Minimonsta was so good at doing the melody to the Doctor Who theme tune. :P I just quickly came up with the name in like, 5 seconds, because the name I had picked out had already sort of been stolen (Starfield).
While I was getting together the instruments for each track, I decided I wanted to use elements from all the different themes... However, only 3 really made it in. And as you can see, they were from the Delaware, Howell's, and McCullogh's versions of the theme tune. The zap in the beginning came directly from Howell DXi but with new effects added. The bass line (made up of 2 parts) also came directly fromHowell DXi, but arranged like McCullogh's bassline. The first and third parts of the melody were made in GForce's Minimonsta. The second part of the melody also came from Howell DXi, but a different version which I submitted twice, but never got in. The same goes for the end explosion. So... uhh... I guess that's it. I had alot of fun making it, and I hope you all enjoy listening to it!

    Dr. N.E.S. by E.E.Berzins

As a huge fan of Dr. Who, particularly the music and sound design, and also classic Nintendo sounds, I went looking for an NES-music styled version of the Dr. Who theme. As I couldn't find one, I made one. :-)

    Rocked Radiophonic by Steve Titford
    Sat, 05 Apr 2008 11:33:42 -0800

3 years after submitting my first version of the Doctor Who theme here is another. It is influenced by several versions of the theme along with a few of my ideas. I produced it in Logic with a few synth plugins (including Korg Legacy) and also recorded some electric guitar.

    Hope you like it.

For fellow tech-heads, I have posted a multitrack version of 'Rocked Radiophonic' on my website. This is available for free download as a Garageband '08 file, Ableton Live project and as separate mp3 stems. Feel free to tweak the mix or use my 'Rocked Radiophonic' stems as you wish (though a mention would be appreciated if you post something that includes elements from my version).

I'll be very interested to hear the results if anyone uses the multitrack files.

    Thanks for looking.

Middle 8 Meddley by Andy T
    Sat, 05 Apr 2008 08:19:49 -0800
This is my medley of all the different Middle-8s presented on Doctor Who over the years. I'm not a musician so these are all sampled - and processed! - from various sources of the original broadcast music. The origins of this came after I first heard the new Middle-8 when watching the Second New Series on DVD. I was so elated that I quickly recorded the soundtrack to my computer, then going through my Doctor Who library patched my own medley together. It was rough but good enough for me. That is, until I found this site the other day. After listening to many very good covers, medleys and remixes, probably all of them by people with far more talent and skill in this sort of thing than I have, I decided my little lame remix effort could stand some improvement. I even mentioned my own previous attempt in my review of Nick's excellent Regenerations 2006 remix.
So today I went and gathered all my best sources of the Dr Who Theme and made another go at it. Since this was to focus on Middle-8s, I didn't really want to include a whole lot of other parts of the Dr Who Theme. However just fading it in partway into the Derbyshire theme was only partially satisfying to me. So I also tried another approach where I took the "stutter start" from the early 70s as rough inspiration and then things got weirder and out of hand by the time I got finished. This is the mix with the more tame/lame intro.
Two other comments... First of all, if someone else has done a Middle 8 medley here before, and I've not heard it yet, apologlies. Nick's Regenerations 2006 is the closest I've seen yet, but mine is focused on Middle 8's and not the more general approach he took. Second, I've not had time yet to download and listen to all the covers and remixes here, but of the 40 or so I've listened to so far, I've not heard a single reference to the infamous "Delaware" mix of the theme. I did use it - I consider it "canon" because it did make it onto some episodes shown overseas - and it was produced under Derbyshire by the Workshop, after all. It's probably the worst broadcast version of the theme out there, but I can't bring myself to completely hate it, so it is included as one of the 7 Middle-8s here. (that was my working title of this, 7x8, but I later decided a more descriptive name was more appropriate)

    ReThemed by Jimmo
    Sat, 05 Apr 2008 07:43:34 -0800
    Hi there!
The attached is a Dr. Who re-theming I did, actually just for fun but I thought I would share the results with you, as I've enjoyed listening to some of the other examples on your site.
This one is intended to be quite different, at least at first, as it evolves from a very simple, eccentric progression into a techno/dance backed track where the famous Dr.Who theme melody comes in. The only samples used are the tardis sound and dalek quotations, I recreated the theme rather than use samples of it.
My music website is www.jimmo.org and I welcome feedback! :)
    All the best! :)
