    RhVibe - "5 Messages"
    Mon, 2 Oct 2006 15:59:22 -0400
While primarily a solo artist, Chris Downing, creator and sometimes only member of the band RhVibe, has made a name for himself in the local community as a live performer and consistently drew 100 head crowds to bars in his home town of Plymouth, NH for open mic nights he hosted in late 2005 and early 2006. After recording his Debut album "Waiting Around" in August of 2005, Chris turned to the internet as his primary resource for new listeners. My Space and Pure Volume became his two best friends, opening up whole new opportunities…and they worked. Getting over 1200 fans on My Space and 17,000 plays on Pure Volume within the first eight months of the CD release in October 2005, all without even touring or radio airplay gave Chris the idea he might be able to make this work.

    Craig Byrnes - "Blue Day"
    Thu, 28 Sep 2006 17:51:25 -0400
Craig started playing guitar at age thirteen and after three lessons turned to the teaching of the grunge guru, Nirvana. "I remember standing in my room at my parents house singing into a Radio Shack microphone running through a practice amp, and playing my white Peavy Predator AX to what must have been every Nirvana song," says Byrnes.

It comes as no surprise that Byrnes has the same effect on a room that Cobain had. With an astounding amount of energy beaming from every performance, Byrnes and co. has shown music fans everywhere REAL music overflowing with passion.

Fans Of Jimmy Century - "Blonde Ambition, Red Temptation"
    Mon, 25 Sep 2006 15:58:52 -0400
San Francisco's newborn electronic duo, Fans of Jimmy Century, deliver groovy, tasty tracks, bringing to mind a mixture of Goldfrapp, The Januaries, & Oakenfold's alluring styles, but w/ a distinctive, undeniable flair all their own. The building security guard downstairs said we were the female electronic equivalent of the Dandy Warhols or The Killers...somewhat. Smooth beats & melodies come to life with a thick fringe of euro smash & noir cinematic soundtrack. Rats, sounded a bit syrupy, didn't it? How 'bout simply "the grooves are swell. the voice & the grooves rendezvous well." There. We've written our own review and it rhymes. The duo of vocalist/composer Alicia Peron and bassist/guitarist/programmer Victor James bring with them much experience with modern music having played the bay area club scene in several popular San Francisco bands. Feeling a natural pull toward the electronic/dance genre, Fans of Jimmy Century was born. Watch for some very visual live performances in 2007. What else do u say when you've only been going a month? Jimmy Century is slang for ? In other health-related news, Victor has quit smoking. Alicia's oral obsession with fake cigarettes remains. I've seen Beyond the Valley of the Dolls 23 times. The 23rd time I fell asleep in my apple jacks.

    dankelso.com - "Since You're Gone"
    Sun, 6 Aug 2006 13:54:22 -0400
A reviewer of our debut EP described us as Pink Floyd meets Enigma, and that basic description has stuck. The ambient, sweeping keyboard sounds combined with Gilmouresque guitar solos certainly support that view. The vocal is Pet Shop Boys influenced. Quite monotone, but sitting well in the music.

Two core members with musical influences from opposing ends of the spectrum. Kelso's lying in the big 80's synthesized soundscapes from the likes of Simple Minds, Level 42 and Depeche Mode.

Local street press gave their debut release, 'The Compassion Circuit EP', favourable reviews and their live show captivated crowds in Adelaides pub and club scene.

    Sleddogs - "Perfect Place"
    Tue, 11 Jul 2006 19:44:16 -0400
It is rather fitting that a BC rock act from Kelowna called Sleddogs received its tag from Winnipeg, Manitoba, the early music roots and the former home of founder Kenny Byrka. (vocals, bass, keyboards). What seems more ironic though is that the current trio was assembled in Kelowna in December of 2004 half way across the Canadian highway of the Great White North, far from prairie whiteouts, frozen fields and blistering wind-chills.

The band is in the process of recording the new project in Vancouver with Steven Drake, targeted for a fall 2006 release date. Fans have a lot to look forward to from Sleddogs with the second CD well under way, followed by another cross Canada tour including US dates, pushing the dogs further into new territory as this band continues to make a serious impact in the music landscape.

The Negatones - "Paused Upon The Rewind"
    Thu, 25 May 2006 14:30:28 -0400
A genre-defying sonic rock freakout by this New York collective of cult producer / remixers. The electro popmetal soundtrack to a party you'd only want to throw in someone else's apartment. For fans of good music and stylistic transcendence.

NYC luminaries have been quietly discovering these local producing / mixing / remixing masterminds; members of the Negatones have worked with Chuck D, Feiry Furnaces, Dan the Automator, Adam Green (Moldly Peaches) and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and that's just in the last year. Their production chops notwithstanding, its their own ferociously unique take on rock that gets them their hard-earned and well-deserved kudos. Fortunately they find the time to continue putting on astonishing live shows and cranking out their own recordings.

Palodine - "Fire In The Field"
    Sat, 20 May 2006 01:58:01 -0400
Children of Coal Miners, Southern Preachers and Mormon Immigrants don't usually make for good rock music candidates, but in the case of Palodine they bring with them an underlying power and intensity which tests the boundaries of dark American music. Within a few months of forming, enough material had been written for their debut full-length "Desolate Son" and they began laying down songs on an 8-track analogue recorder. The result is a provocative portrayal of violence, remorse, and final words. Alternating in mood from fierce to somber, Desolate Son is bound together by the rich vocals of Katrina Whitney and the lush instrumentation of Michael Aryn. Adding the final touches of pedal steel, dobro, bass, and backing vocals, Jason Brooks completes the trio.

John Stowers - "All I Am Missing"
    Thu, 18 May 2006 18:55:16 -0400
Collecting classic vinyl is a passion of mine. So I spent my formative years listening to records from the sixties and the seventies. I have tons of influences, but there were two reasons I started writing songs: The Beatles and The Blues. I write contemporary pop/rock songs along with more rootsy blues/rock tunes. I'm a singer/songwriter that wants to be a band. No whining 11 minute durges here. I love big melodic vocal and guitar hooks so I put as many as I can fit into every track. My story or motivation is similar to that of the British Invasion, only in reverse - I grew up in rural Missouri surrounded bv American roots music and blues/rock, but all I wanted to do was write songs like all the UK bands I loved.

Tracy Gibbons - "Take Refuge In Me"
    Thu, 18 May 2006 18:50:49 -0400
Tracy delivers Americana in a rich blend of folk, rock, blues and alternative-country with an ambient contemporary edge. Her lyrics are "anything but a typical folk singer on a journey. The songs are like fire and ice. Smoking hot melody versus a smooth, calming sound stretched across lyrics so personal you would swear your best friend was singing to you" (GoGirlsMusic).

"The lyrics are brilliant..." (Durfee) ... "Gibbons seems to easily wrap complicated emotions and descriptive narratives in to a single verse. Very mature writing and performance."

Tracy's songs reflect an intense curiosity about life and relationships. The inclination to dig deep and be fearlessly honest is at the core of her artistic style. Her goal is to write from a place so true that others can recognize and embrace her stories as their own.

    Zoe Scott - "Planet Love"
    Thu, 5 Oct 2006 01:24:36 -0400
Born and raised in London, Zoe's musical journey began on the mountains of Spain-where she sat for five months in an isolated mountain house listening to the song-writers of the 1960's. Moved by the purity and passion of the music and lyrics , the poetess and film student knew she needed to move to California to fulfill her destiny and make the music she was born to create.

Zoe is a unique artist who has lived and performed all over the world, including Rome, London, New York, Spain, Los Angeles and India. She is a real artist in the true sense of the word, who prefers to look at the world through spiritual eyes. She is an original. And no doubt someday another young songwriter will be sitting on a mountain in a remote part of the world, listening to Zoe's music and will be inspired to follow her path.

Angela Hammontree Band - "No Sympathy"
    Tue, 16 May 2006 12:08:04 -0400
Angela Hammontree is a native Seattle area rock artist whose powerhouse vocals and inspired songwriting are her trademark. As a published writer and poet with a degree in creative writing, a multi-instrumentalist, and a trained vocalist, Angela brings many things to the table in her musical pursuits. The result is distinctly catchy songs with great hooks, arresting vocals, and lyrics that are as sincere as they can be scathing. Angela is often summed up as "the real deal" by those who see her perform, and although her fierce style of delivery is unique, her vocal prowess invokes the power of Chris Cornell, the range of Robert Plant, and the bold emotionality of Janis Joplin. The authentic nature of her talent and presence makes her a favorite among rockers who are seeking the substance missing from much of today's rock music scene.

    LoversLane - "Hey Mary"
    Tue, 16 May 2006 00:49:04 -0400
LoversLane Some say New York rock is dead. The club scene is dead. When people go out, they want to hear DJ's... Obviously, these naysayers haven't experienced LoversLane, screaming out of downtown NYC with a ferocity unseen since the glory days of punk. Like a long-needed kick in the ass, their searing guitar-driven sound will wake up anyone who's been sleeping on New York rock. Yes, LoversLane has two songs on East Coast Commercial Radio rotation right now. And yes, they blew away a thousand-strong crowd at Webster Hall, New York's notorious citadel of musical sin. And you should probably know that they've played major festivals from Montreal to Memphis, as well as headlining European rock festivals with the bands Hey and Kazik. That's rock n' roll. Bragg sings like the love child of Roger Waters and Ric Okasek - on PCP. And Brother Reg works his axe like he's on a mission from god, spreading a gospel of fat licks and delicious tube distortion. Check out the songs "Falling Over" and "Holiday" - Lovers Lane are what everybody has been so desperately awaiting: pure, unrelenting 21st century Rock N' Roll.

    Fire Bug - "Paradise"
    Sun, 14 May 2006 11:39:25 -0400
Fire Bug creates something new and wonderful the way a splash of vermouth and a couple of olives adds a new dimension to a shot of vodka. Forged in the storied Wicker Park section of Chicago by vocalist Juliette Tworsey and guitarist Jules Shapiro, they began cutting their musical teeth at local Chicago venues like The Double Door, Subterranean, and The Elbo Room. They decided to make their way out to Los Angeles to hook up with the incredible talents of L.A. natives drummer Ty Dennis (21st Century Doors) and bassist Miiko Watanabe (Gwen Stefani). Since then, Fire Bug has become a part of the essential club scene and has created a niche playing unplugged sets at alternative venues. Whatever the venue, you can expect an energetic and charismatic show.

    io Perry - "Eugene's Holiday"
    Thu, 4 May 2006 21:23:09 -0400
The product of a divorced hippy couple in Toronto, io Perry's happiest memories involve being raised in a barn while under the care of her starving artist father. Her alternative grade school's curriculum mainly entailed listening to Beatles records, which, although preventing a career in rocket science, did manage to keep her interest and inspire a love of music. As she grew, she supplemented her force-fed Fab Four diet with Nirvana, The Cure, Meat Puppets and the Pixies, at which point she became inspired by Kim Deal to pick up the bass. Having moved from Toronto to Montreal to New York, she settled in Los Angeles in 1996, where she has played for such bands as A&M Records' Old Hickory, Project K and The Green and Yellow TV. After years of touring Europe as hired bass player for hard-edged cult sensations Tito and Tarantula, io has now released herself into the wild and picked up the six string in search of her own style. Her debut cd, Greybay (produced by former bandmate Tito Larriva) is seductively cold and sweetly sad with liberating bursts of infatuation and bitterness.

The Green And Yellow TV - "Monday Tuesday"
    Wed, 30 Aug 2006 10:56:52 -0400
The Green and Yellow TV make music that exists somewhere between pop's past and it's future, between the first giddy wave of Sixties psychedelic exuberance and a sound entirely new, a mix of crisp vocal harmonies and delicately constructed melodies which manage to take the familiar and make it fresh- all over again. Turn on The Green and Yellow TV and you'll hear hints of Kinks' bounciness, sleek Beach Boys' beauty and some classic rock swagger, but soaring above it all is a bright and beautiful sound of their very own.

With their newest album, Sinister Barrier, The Green and Yellow TV have honed their skills to a sharp and gleaming edge, producing an array of distinctive songs that take the pop tradition and run. This is a band that knows exactly how to bring an unexpected depth to a catchy beat without losing all the sweetness of accessibility, and Sinister Barrier delivers the pop sugar with enough guitar grit and lyrical smarts to keep away the cavities.

    The Attorneys - "Stay"
    Fri, 20 Jan 2006 14:25:49 -0400
Three Boys from Brooklyn charge into the musical fray with melancholy, multilayered vocals and a canny combination of staccato riffs and expansive atmosphere.

William Ryan George had complete strangers of both sexes proclaiming their love of him when he made his first appearance at The King of Karaoke's Trash Bar Friday Night. His fragile yet complex demeanor is gentle and approachable, and so is his songwriting . A Brian Wilson for generation Y.

John Wlaysewski is making waves in the indie guitar community with his double mono split delay amp setup, used to great effect on instrumental numbers that have the mensa members in the audience scratching their heads. A self taught musical experimentalist , he has been compared to The Edge and Robert Fripp in the same sentence.

Colin Schiller has navigated the musical landscape of NYC and is known throughout New York, NJ and all of Long Island. His martial, deliberate drum style and commitment to creativity guarantee that every song has been exhausted of options before drum decisions are made. A timing genius and a rock god in the making, Colin will often come out from behind the drum set to sing with the rest of the band.

Quietly considered one of New York City's most promising independent acts (sold out Bowery Ballroom, Top Ten sales CMJ week at both NYC Tower Record Stores), THE KIN's music is passionate, raw and poetic. The New York Times describes them as "bombastic" and TimeOut NY calls their music "soulful." Co-lead Isaac Koren remarks, "We play for the soul of it, the love of it and the need to do it." Thorry Koren adds, "Our music comes from making those eloquent mistakes".

The Kin's sound is a dynamic exchange and musical bond between Australian brothers, Isaac and Thorry Koren, who co-write and co-front the band. These Aussie lads have self produced and self-released one full LP (Tracing, 2004), two five song EPs (Red & Black 2005), and a 'Live at The Bowery Ballroom' DVD (2006).

Alan Robert - "Things Gotta Change"
    Wed, 4 Jan 2006 21:02:13 -0400
Raised in Kentucky and born during the worst blizzard in thirty years, Alan Robert tries to make sense among the ruins with the only tools available, his mind and voice. Moved from Kentucky to Los Angeles and fell in with the right crowd. Not a preacher or a prophet. Just a songwriter who enjoys sharing his time's labors and offers a great time while doing it.

Harpooning listeners with his soulful mix of haunting ballads and life-altering guitar licks, Alan Robert walks the fine line between genius and insanity- and he walks it well. Tantalized fans from around the globe may not be able to place his mystifying lyrics or unique vocal presentation into one category but all would agree that his insoluble serenades fill their snowshoes with the kind of warm gooey richness of a fireplace nap coupled with a marmalade sandwich served on two slices of a rainbow.

    Jessie Murphy - "Room Alone"
    Sat, 26 Aug 2006 19:27:36 -0400
Jessie Murphy was born and raised in New York City and her original songs and style have made her a favorite performer in her hometown and in New York's legendary Antifolk scene. "There's a cargo hold of humanity in the beautiful Jessie Murphy's songs," read last Summer's Antifolk Fest program, "She packs houses, she wows crowds, she's one to watch." Jessie is also a frequent Village Voice choice. The paper once described singer-songwriter Jessie Murphy as sounding like both a "photonegative of Jimi Hendrix" and "Joni Mitchell's scrappy kid sister with a voice like rippling silk."

Murphy grew up listening to Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Al Green, Simon and Garfunkel and Sarah Vaughn. In recent years she's also been influenced by artists like Belle and Sebastian, Fiest, The Kings of Convenience and Regina Spektor. Foremost a guitarist, she spent a year developing her guitar work and performance style at the Berkley School of Music in Boston. Murphy graduated from Columbia University with a combined degree in English and Creative Writing. Upon graduation, she embarked on a professional career in music, teaching private guitar lessons while continuing to study music independently.

    Sat, 26 Aug 2006 19:19:27 -0400
The Last Show is a New York City punk power trio with a sound that lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Justin Lizama describes as "bipolar rock." You can hear what he means on "DC (Choose a Side)," a track from the band's recently issued EP Honestly is a Word Used by Liars. As the song begins, Lizama's dark melody and foreboding lyrics are propelled by a sonic assault of driving bass, relentless drums and howling guitar feedback. But in an abrupt mood shift, the band breaks into a triumphant punk chorus with the lyric "People, people, Take a walk outside / Save your soul, save your mind."

The Mercury Seed - "Come Undone"
    Mon, 21 Aug 2006 19:49:40 -0400
Go spend some quality time with Dust, the second independently released CD by The MercurySeed, and the essence of indie rock is unveiled. "Waiting," case in point, which starts off with authentic scratchy AM radio snow, is the kind of fast-folk pop tune that Tom Petty would be proud of, with Robert Smith guitar accents straight outta the Cure layered over a jangle of acoustic stronk associated with Whiskeytown, but chopped-up Keith Richards style. "Come Undone," a little two-chord rocker, works up a Beach Boys vocal harmony on the chorus, a bridge that pays homage to the Who, and an elastic James Burton West Coast guitar solo that's redolent of Ricky Nelson's Imperial years. Got the picture"

    Steve Carlson - "Wasted Jaime"
    Mon, 14 Aug 2006 15:00:08 -0400
Born and raised in Southern California, Carlson had a bohemian upbringing in an artistic family. A fan of artists that include many genres, Steve credits The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Taj Mahal, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Eagles, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones as some of his biggest influences.

"Though he evokes some of the best singers/songwriters of the seventies, Carlson has a modern edge and a neo-country aroma to his work that sets it apart. 'Spot In The Corner', his full length CD, presents a thoughtful, skillful artist and hi backup players." Music Connection - 2004

    Shawn Brown - "Lucky Boy"
    Sat, 12 Aug 2006 12:18:12 -0400
Shawn just recently completed an aggressive yearlong stint on the road, in support of his newest release, "Lucky Boy". The disk, produced Pat Mosca and Tony Saunders, successfully combines Brown's signature acoustic rock with an urgent contemporary "street" feel. The result is a potent mix of upbeat, radio friendly fun and Shawn's soul-drenched, emotive voice. Shawn describes his disk as "singer-songwriter vibe mixed with a generous helping of urban, hip-hop soul." "Lucky Boy" found many eager listeners over the last year and was supported enthusiastically by both fans and critics. ("This guy gives Rob Thomas a run for his money!" Away Team. COM.) His sound has fueled comparisons to artists such as March Broussard, Gavin Degraw, and Jason Mraz. As to all the attention that the last year as heaped on him, Shawn smiles wide and says softly "Pretty wild, huh?"

Jay Lustig, pop music critic for the Star-Ledger of New Jersey writes: "Rogers does it all: his songwriting is evocative, his singing conveys warmth and dignity, and his guitar playing packs a punch."

    Dina Gathe - "Bother Me"

No Doubt meets The Pretenders and Green Day... Razor-sharp six strings, sexy vocals and sparkling songcraft: Dina Gathe fuses a wealth of influences into a singular modern rock sound.

    Derek Clegg - "Tonight"
    Tue, 25 Jul 2006 14:42:24 -0400
This may be Derek's first official cd, but this should not leave one to believe that music is something that Derek has just fallen into. This cd has been 5 years in the making. Pulling from early influences such as Dave Matthews and Ben Harper, then fusing it with the quirky and twangy guitars often found in such artists as Ryan Adams and Wilco, Derek developed a sound that is not easily categorized. Just when you hear one song and think you have his style down, the next song leads to thinking of an entire new set of influences. The self titled cd shows just how far recording has come in the home studio setting, and pushes it ever further in its commercial appeal and character.

    Kenin - Take A Walk
    Wed, 2 Aug 2006 11:22:03 -0400
Kenin's sound is a mix of genres - the band is fronted by an acoustic guitar, so it begs to be called acoustic rock. But the guitar is played hard, the drums are heavy and the lead guitar is an often-distorted electric, which pushes Kenin out of the acoustic rock genre. There is a lot of percussion, and a lot of live improvisation, which makes it feel at times like a jam-rock band. Regardless of the genre, it's appealing and it's based in the roots of rock.

    Bill Reveles - "Creep Inside"
    Tue, 25 Jul 2006 14:39:05 -0400
Songwriting turned sideways. Classic, Traditional...yes. Schizophrenic...maybe. Neurotic...definitely. Folk-Rock, AAA, Alt Country, Rock and Pop depending on the moment. The songs, with their painfully real lyrics, have been characterized as reminiscent of John Lennon's edgier solo stuff and his slower songs and lyrics as that of Bruce Springsteen. It has been said that his passionate voice reminds one of a male version of Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders.
