If Mr. Obama never said anything that really demonstrated an interest in doing things in a progressive way then why so many complaints about who his cabinet picks are? He never ran on a liberal ideology, he ran on competency and professionalism, on a different and better direction from where we've been going, which is what we're getting. Dennis Kucinich, or any other hard liberal you can name, - TV Couples

Some time ago, I wrote an essay about my favorite anime series, Maison Ikkoku, and since my wife's birthday passed recently (Nov. 15: she would have been 49, I turned 47 the same day), I was thinking about fictional couples I've seen on TV that I enjoyed watching, and I thought it would be a nice change of pace from the usual, depressing, political items. Here's a list, in chronological order, - Class Warfare

Glen Greenwald writes: Behold the excuses which former Bush DOJ lawyer and current Harvard Law Professor Jack Goldsmith offers up today in The Washington Post on behalf of his former colleagues, as he argues not only that Bush's torture regime shouldn't be criminally prosecuted, but also that no new investigations of any kind -- including by Congress or an Executive branch truth-finding - Bailout

For those of you who are unaware of it, even those of us on unemployment pay taxes on that income. And some of that tax money is now going to be used to bail out Citibank, apparently. I'm a fuckup and I know it, but the difference between Citibank and me is that when Citibank fucks up, they can count on money from me to help them out. Try going into a Citibank branch, explain to them how you - Housecleaning

I've added Home Of The Brave to the blog roll and Huffington Post to the regular buttons, and in the next week or so I will be going through the blog roll to see who's still active. I need to stay focused on studying for my upcoming tests, so I can't say how much activity there will be. - Wow

When I tell people how much (or more precisely, how little) money I have made in the three years since my Cathy died (and never mind how little I made in the last year of her life, while she was in and out of the hospital), many are shocked that I managed to survive at all, or at least how I've managed to avoid homelessness after all this time. A lot of it is due to the fact that there are - Irrational Self-Interest

Right-wingers (objectivists and libertarians in particular) point out that the two things they base their ideology on are "rugged individualism" and "rational self-interest". The former is a myth, because humans have survived over the years by controlling their environment and all societies have been built on establishing a set of rules that we are supposed to follow so that we can survive and - Patience, Grasshopper

Look, I know we're all pissed off at what's been happening over the last eight years and are looking forward to some instant gratification. I'd love to take a magic wand, toss all the bastards responsible in the slammer, and fix all the mess that's been caused by conservatives over the last few years right now, but that just ain't gonna happen. It seems like an eternity ago we had prosperity, The future looking great for one and all But it took only eight short years to wreck our hopes and bring us tears No one imagined how low we would fall That's what you get when you elect a poster boy for brain defects A bully who would drag us into war Don't feel so bad if you were fooled, the newsmen loved this old buffoon He wasn't like that - The Day The Earth Stood Still

It's been a long time coming, and the wait has seemed interminable. For myself, and for tens of millions like me, the last eight years has seemed like we've been tied to a tree, helplessly watching while the house we've so painstakingly built is slowly burned to the ground. For the first time in a long time, we may finally be free to put the fire out and begin the process of rebuilding. It's a - Stand Proud, Phyllis Huster

In the midst of all this happiness came the news that my good friend Phyllis Huster fell just short of becoming a state Senator from Washington. But she did very well when you consider that she was a first-time candidate running against a long-time incumbent in what is a very red district indeed. I'm proud of her, and I hope that we can continue to expand the 50-state project begun by Gov. Dean - Barack Obama For President

This is, of course, belaboring the obvious for those of you who read my site on a regular basis. There seems to be little doubt, and the polls, both state-by-state and national, seem to be backing this up, that in the minds of all but the most blindlessly loyal of Republicans that Sen. Barack Obama, of all the candidates in the upcoming election, is the one we should choose to be the next - McGollum

I've been reading a lot of posts about the coming attempt by the GOP to steal this election as they did in 2000 and 2004, both in the lefty blogs and in my own comments page, and while I respect you all, and while I agree that they certainly want to do that, please let me be very clear: this election isn't going to be close enough to steal. The insane base of the GOP is going apeshit over Obama, and McCain and Palin have been fanning the flames, though today McCain tried to calm things down a bit. I heard through the grapevine that some close advisors (perhaps Lieberman?) told him his reputation would be ruined if he didn't respond to the crowds and tone down the rhetoric. But the GOP has laid a very solid foundation, and the idea - Gambling

Watching the market go crazy is a rather fascinating hobby of mine. Of course, being at or near the very bottom of the economic ladder in this country, it's nothing more than a voyeuristic habit, as what's going on there isn't necessarily going to make my life very much worse (money-wise) from where it already is. Certainly when the market skyrocketed from 2,000 to 10,000, it didn't make me - My Conditions

Every now and then, a right-winger still tries to get me into a "serious" discussion with them, either to talk about current events or a general philosophy of life, the universe, and everything. Years ago I would take them up on it, but as the months and years went by I found, as I mentioned in my previous post, that the conversation was becoming more and more ridiculous while the world around - Attack Of The Pig People

It's been a busier few days than usual. My IT classes have started up again and I am trying to concentrate on those, plus of course still looking for work. The money situation makes that difficult because I often don't have enough money for bus fare, and I am constantly running in the negative in the bank account, which is why I asked for a little help in my last post: I know things are tight - Once More Into The Breach

I hear a lot of talk, blah blah blah, from bloggers and Congressmen and other Wise People about what we're going to do in terms of a "bailout". I don't hold out much hope that anything good will come of all this. We're beginning the "negotiations" with the premise that we give these guys a blank check and immunity, we ought to begin by offering to throw all the bastards in the slammer, - Dear Penn Jillette

I'm sorry, Penn, but you're just wrong, and I think, like most "libertarians", you're trying to make a theoretical philosophical point while ignoring the practical realities of what the Bush administration, the Republican leadership, and their primary financial backers are doing. Speaking with my good friend the Thane of Fascistan the other day, I noted that Phil Gramm's comments on us being "whiners" were like a bunch of thugs beating the crap out of you in an alley then telling you to quit crying. That's pretty much Republican ideology these days anyway, that's pretty much what conservatism is, as I see it: You're On Your Own. Tomorrow, I get to go to the food - Cards
