Here at Whole Wheat Radio we focus on Musicians as the Artists, but there are many more fields to that broad description. I probably have close to 50 websites that I go to daily. Some sites are just for finding articles that I think might interest folks that I know. But there are a couple of sites that I frequent for pure enjoyment. A Walk Through Durham Township, Pennsylvania is one of my delights. Back in January 2003, Kathleen Connally started this photoblog of the surrounding area of Durham. As Kathleen states, "ongoing attempt to become a better photographer", which shows a determination that few of us share. Could you show the world a picture a day for over 4 years? I know that I could not!

I always thought the year slowed down around the Fall. This year I'm wrong, but that's a good thing. Our little band is busier than ever. We have a *lot* of shows this month, and new dates are popping up through the end of the year. What's particularly cool is that several of our upcoming shows are benefits for local charities, and it's always nice to be able to help out a cause. Here's a quick rundown:

    • Saturday 10/7 / 12:00-3:00 pm
Friends of Buena Vista Harvest Party Corralitos, CA
      http://www.friendsofbuenavista.com

FoBV is pushing for sensible growth in the semi-rural farmland north of Watsonville. (The city itself has plans for 2500 homes.) This event is a fundraiser with a raffle, silent auction, BBQ dinner, and live music featuring songs about mules and cars. ;)

    • Thursday 10/18 / 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
Don Quixote's Music Hall / Felton, CA
      http://www.donquixotesmusic.info

This is a co-bill with Cooper Street. Tickets are $8.00 in advance, and you can pick them up at Don Q's or buy them directly from me. All proceeds from our share of the ticket sales go to Felton Library Friends (http://www.feltonlibraryfriends.org). (Yay books!)

    • Sunday 11/4 / 12:00 - 4:00 pm
November-fest at Pacific Apiary Farms / Watsonville, CA
      http://www.pacificcrestapiaries.com/id30.html

Besides an afternoon of music, wine, honey, and crafts, there will be a raffle with all proceeds going to Jacob's Heart (http://www.jacobsheart.org).

    • Saturday 12/1 / time TBD
Corralitos Festival of Lights / Corralitos, CA

This is an annual day of arts, crafts, and music out in the little country burg of Corralitos. It's also a benefit for the Corralitos Cultural Center, which provides art classes and maintains a library in Corralitos. Our actual playing slot is TBD, but we're likely playing two sets.

Besides these four gigs, you can also see us at the usual haunts like the monthly Wooden Nickel Open Mic, Roudon-Smith Winery's Post-Harvest Celebration (http://www.roudonsmith.com/events.html#oct) - and at some newer spots like Monterey's East Village Coffee Lounge (http://www.eastvillagecoffeelounge.com).

We'd love to see ya sometime soon. For more info, check out my Shows page at:

  • Atuuschaaw: Wheatheads at MO's Edge
    Wed, 31 Dec 1969 13:59:59 -1000 Author: jm1@wholewheatradio.org (Jimbob)
On Monday, September 24, 2007, it was my pleasure to meet up with a few Wheatheads in a wonderful little coffeehouse in Memphis. I had talked with Rich Baumann and Mikael Santana about meeting at MO's Edge, and they were excited about the idea. Why MO's Edge? Well, I have been talking with a good friend of mine named Phillip Beasley (Beez), who is currently the president of the Memphis Songwriters Association. Beez told me about Nita Black, who along with Frank James, owns and manages MO's Edge. Nita is a huge supporter of Memphis musicians and artists of all mediums and she opens the doors for MSA meetings and functions. Great people...wonderful homey feeling. You don't feel like a stranger while you're at MO's. And MO's double espresso drink, the Avalanche, is good enough to become addicting. It will probably go onto the illegal substance list before too much longer! If any of you happen to be passing through the Memphis area, please stop in and say Hi to Nita. You won't be sorry!

So as all of us were getting aquainted, we met this very charming and talented young lady named Iris Leu, who had signed up for her three songs on this open mic night. As we talked, and the subject of Whole Wheat Radio was introduced, I was shocked when she said, Yes, I know Whole Wheat. I have my music on their website. Sure enough, here we were thinking how cool it was that there were three of us from WWR getting to spend some time together, and then we find another in a homey little coffehouse in Memphis! So now there were four!

I would like to mention a couple of the other artists who performed. Both are members of MSA, good musicians, and down to earth good people. Jobu Babin was the first to get up and demonstrate his abilities. Here are a few words about Jobu from his site:
Memphis native Jobu Babin knows the demons that accompany songwriters: the incessant wordplay, the fear and loathing of anything cliche, and sometime futile attempts to match the mood of a vocal to, well, anything. And, of course, the biggest concern, "can anybody GET this?" "Its a patchwork. I write like I'm making a quilt." Pieces come and go, vocals rise and fall, and ideas not quite musical generally take over the process, yet, Jobu's songs stare in the face of convention.

The next performer was John Mathewson, who is a student at the University of Memphis and is working on his bachelors in recording technology. Here are a few words from his site:
I traveled up to Tennessee to pursue my songwriting goals. Currently I am a student at the University of Memphis finishing up my bachelors degree in recording technology. You can catch me around town at various open mic's and whatever gig I can get my grubby hands on. After graduating I plan on moving to Nashville, and write songs for a living.

I have discussed with Beez the opportunities that the Internet offers independent musicians and also it's ability for building ties within the music communities. Essentially, I have been preaching on the great communal relationships that I have witnessed on Whole Wheat Radio between the artists and the listeners. Beez has shown a lot of interest in expanding the MSA's web presence and we thought the open mic night at MO's would be an excellent opportunity for some of the Whole Wheat people to meet with some of the members of MSA. And it was a treat to have the opportunity to be with other Wheatheads, as well as with some great people from the Memphis music scene and members of the MSA community. Hopefully this is the beginning of an ongoing collaboration that will bear fruit as songwriters and musicians extend their friendship and share links between their communities. MSA will be upgrading/changing their website in the near future and the importance of the artist's listener/supporters will be addressed as well as a need for a more interactive site. I hope to see some of my Memphis neighbors visiting WWR, and hopefully some will join, submit some of their music, and become part of the community! As for myself, I will definitely be visiting MO's again and show support for the excellent artists in the Memphis area.

"Songs and Stories #8: Interview with Joziah Longo (of Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams)

One of the greatest things about going to a multi-day music festival is always "discovering" great bands and songwriters I've never heard of. In this particular case, it's "Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams", an eclectic rock band from Philadelphia.

In this audio magazine, I talk with Joziah Longo, the band's lead singer and songwriter. He explains the intention behind the band's name (there is no Gandalf Murphy), how starting on the folk circuit gave them freedom with their lyrics, and their multiple-genre approach that allows them to play any style of music they wish.
