    Wed, 02 Jul 2008 21:46:00 -0500 Author: alaskapodshow@gmail.com (Scott Slone)

Alaska HDTV Presents: Hatcher Pass "Unknown" hike.

Greetings Hike of the Week fans!

We originally had another hike planned but the pass was not open through to Summit Lake, so the hike was diverted to a spontaneous location I've not hiked in over ten years. ÂWe'll call this one though a very scenic, family friendly, and not heavily traveled hike from what I could see. It's July 2nd as I write this and we've still a fare amount of snow still on the ground with early spring still coming through in areas above 2000 feet.

    Enjoy the SHOW

Hike of the Week | Hiking with Sarah Palin in Juneau | Alaska Podshow
    Wed, 20 Feb 2008 10:19:00 -0600 Author: alaskapodshow@gmail.com (Scott Slone)

    Alaska Podshow HD

This had to be one of the best adventures Iâve taken, and Juneau is an incredible place. Since 1906 this has been the Capital of Alaska, so the history and culture is rich in Juneau â Sharing this part of Alaska was tops when Governor Sarah Palin joined us on a short hike up to her office in the capital!

See back in 1880 two guys Joe Juneau and Dick Harris were led by a Tlingit chief named Kowee to local gold reserves at Snow Slide Gulch. Juneau would never be the same as stampedes of miners soon led to the formation of a mining camp. In 1906, this camp had grown and evolved into a district government and capital of Alaska. A little known fact is that Juneau was first named Harrisburg after Dick Harris, but Joe Juneau - as a result of some very effective political arm-twisting at a minersâ meeting in 1881 - won forever the name of Alaskaâs capital city.

So many today have mixed opinions about Juneau. Some complain because the rainfall averages some 50+ inches each year, but thatâs typical for southeast Alaska! Itâs the history, people, and adventures that are accessible in and around Juneau that make it one of my top spots. In my opinion and in few words â Juneau is not to be missed. Go!

    Hike of the WeekÂ

    Â

It's the new Flattop Mountain Hike! If you're seeking a family friendly hike with amazing views beyond the popular Flattop Mountain in Anchorage, this gem of a hike is 30 minutes drive from downtown Anchorage.

    - Located 30 minutes from downtown Anchorage - Starting elevation: 2,626 ft. - Top elevation: 3,850 ft. Lots of history available, easy trails, amazing views. Please respect the fences placed by the U.S. Army, area might also be closed due to military exercises.. but it's rare. And if you're feeling bold? Rendezvous peak is also accessible to the northeast of the radar summit. The path stated on this google earth is the path we took.

    Fri, 19 Oct 2007 22:16:00 -0500 Author: alaskapodshow@gmail.com (Scott Slone)

Welcome to Alaska Podshow's Hike of the Week

    Bear Mountain!Â

Bear Mountain offers scenic views, while also offering a quick elevation gain. This hike is a bit strenuous in parts, and you'll want to be sure the trail has been free of rain, or ice as melting makes these steep slopes a challenge. The views from the top are priceless, and if possible bring a tent and explore for a day or two! In the fall season you'll also have the opportunity to see both Moose, Sheep, as well be aware of Bears. There are a few other late in the season perks on this hike, but we locals prefer you keep it to yourself once you make the discovery.
