  • Encourage young people to take action in your community
    Fri, 17 Oct 2008 15:56:15 GMT Author: info@podmaster.co.uk (Podmaster)
Do you know an 11 – 18 year old who has an idea or is already creating change? If so, boost their confidence and life skills and help your local community at the same time: Nominate them for a CHANGEit award. Whether it’s a scheme for reducing litter, making a dent in street crime or setting up an after school club, CHANGEit encourages young people to take their ideas and make them happen. CHANGEit, run by Common Purpose and supported by Deutsche Bank, will award prizes to young people for their campaigning projects and fantastic ideas. Campaigns can be big or small and deal with any issue or challenge. The judges are looking for passion, innovation and the determination to really make change happen. It has nothing to do with academic achievement or exam grades, but everything to do with helping young people make positive change happen. There are three different categories to apply for with prizes up to £750! Nominations open 1 October 2008. To find out more and advice from this year’s winners, TV presenter Ben Shephard has the full story... Encourage your child to submit a campaign idea, or nominate them to celebrate the difference they’ve already made! What are you waiting for? For more information and the online nomination form, visit www.changeit.org.uk. Enter today!

  • Irvine Welsh: “Do give up your day job”
    Thu, 07 Aug 2008 11:24:59 GMT Author: info@podmaster.co.uk (Podmaster)
“Choose life. Choose a job.” Fans of novelist Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting will instantly recognise the famous opening lines of anti-hero Mark Renton’s damning tirade against ‘the straight life’. And now that the author has chosen to offer his support to the Vodafone Group Foundation’s World of Difference programme he’s given us an opportunity to interpret those same words in an altogether more benign context. Nearly two thirds of people in the UK say they’re not satisfied with their jobs. Many of us think that taking a break from work to pursue other interests or offer our time to charity would give us not just a greater sense of satisfaction but also the opportunity to do something genuinely worthwhile. Nearly a third of us are sufficiently moved by media reports about less fortunate people that we want to do something to help, according to a new survey by The Vodafone Group Foundation. As for Irvine Welsh, the depth of his social conscience is immediately apparent to anyone who’s ever opened one of his books. Nowadays, by his own admission he’s a somewhat mellower man than the one who constructed Trainspotting’s brutal portrait of Edinburgh’s underground culture back in the ‘90s. Perhaps that is part of the reason he’s lending his support to the World of Difference programme, which is based around the concept that individuals and community organisations should identify what they feel passionate about and then be provided with the resources to make changes happen. This year, four lucky Brits will be given the opportunity to put their job on hold for a year whilst earning up to £25k working for a charity of their choice. “Choose life, choose a job”indeed. • pension contributions offers public sector employees the chance to change the world for the better
    Tue, 08 Apr 2008 10:50:57 GMT Author: info@podmaster.co.uk (Podmaster)
£13m of new pension contributions offers doctors, teachers and government employees the chance to change the world for the better Public sector workers, including doctors, teachers and local government employees, stand to benefit from £13 million in new pension contributions when they volunteer with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) according to a new government announcement. Volunteers will be working in some of the poorest countries in the world and will help VSO further their fifty-year fight against world poverty. Previously some public servants have been reluctant to take a career break because of the impact this would have on their pensions contributions. Now however the government will be reimbursing pension contributions whilst volunteers are away through the use of added pension benefits on return. Any current public servant who returns to a pensionable UK public service job after an overseas volunteer assignment starting between April 2008 and March 2011 and lasting between 7 and 24 months will be eligible for the incentive which will lower the financial impact for individuals who volunteer. Presently only around 350 UK public servants per year take up such assignments, from a public service of some 4 million. It is hoped that this new government incentive will make a significant difference to the number of public sector workers entering the programme which has been a life changing experience for thousands of past volunteers, and the communities volunteers have helped. Judith Brodie, Director of VSO comments “This move demonstrates that the Government is supporting UK public servants to undertake structured assignments of voluntary service in poor countries, and also encouraging them to return to enrich the UK public service with the experiences and skills gained.”

If you can’t accept it, CHANGEit
    Wed, 10 Oct 2007 12:11:47 GMT Author: info@podmaster.co.uk (Podmaster)
The “CHANGEit” scheme assists youngsters who want to get their campaigning idea off the ground and to celebrate the success of those who have already made change happen. It encourages youngsters to campaign about any topic that may affect their lives and will then take nominations for the best campaigns. The judges are looking for achievable ideas and determination to make them happen, or evidence of a campaign that has had an impact and the way it has been delivered. CHANGEit launches on 10 October 2007 and is open for nominations until 15 December 2007.

    Crime Scene Wild
    Thu, 04 Oct 2007 19:20:51 GMT Author: info@podmaster.co.uk (Podmaster)
The illegal trade in protected wildlife is booming and is second only to drugs in volume and money. The world’s rarest and best loved species are most at risk; caged bears milked for their bile, tigers hunted for their skins and bones for tiger wine, elephants poached for their ivory, gorillas killed for their meat and sharks butchered alive. Shamefully, the industry is worth over £5billion a year and until now, any conservationist standing in a poachers path was likely to be shot dead. Ruthlessness is rife and animals with no means of defending themselves are tortured and slaughtered to the very brink of extinction. What this merciless mob don’t know is that they will soon be on the run themselves, as special agent Steve Galster sets out on a mission to hunt them down. His new TV show on Animal Planet, “Crime Scene Wild” sees him patrolling poaching hotspots, hunting down dealers and serving up some long overdue justice alongside an armed team. Steve’s quest is a renewed effort to awaken people to some disturbing truths, and to finally hit back at those responsible for countless acts of atrocious animal cruelty. Foremost in his arsenal is the cutting-edge application of forensics and DNA technology. Steve has teamed up DNA experts around the world, who are spearheading the new techniques, crucial in taking the fight against wildlife crime to the next level.
