  • "If you're out on your bike tonight, do wear white"
    Mon, 07 May 2007 10:56:26 -0500
If the above means something to you - you either are a Rolling Stones
fan, or a fan of Tony Kornheiser. The latter this week returned to the
airwaves with Washington Post Radio after several months off. He last
was on the radio in DC at WTEM (Sportstalk 980), but left to concentrate
on his upcoming Monday Night Football gig.

Anyway, I was in DC earlier this week and got to listen to the show over
the air. He sounds great and is sharp as ever. You can also hear the show
over the internet at washingtonpostradio.com. From that site you can
even hear the show from your freakin' cell phone. Sweet. Yaay, Mr. Tony!

  • Busy couple of weeks (part 1)
    Tue, 20 Mar 2007 09:10:17 -0500
    Hello all,

First of all, with the help of our tax refund, Jessica and I went to
our first Thrashers game of the season on Thursday March 8 against
Les Habitants de Montreal (Canadiens). We got our tickets through a
ticket agency (RazorGator, with an office here in Atlanta). We got a
pair of $75 lower level, attack twice seats for $32 each. Less than half
of face. Then the Thrash scored 2 in the 1st and 4 in the 2nd en route
to a 6-2 crushing. AND Kovalchuck got into a small skirmish (sticking
up for Hossa) prompting Tkachuk to step in and punish the Canadien.
It was a great game. Making things even sweeter - traffic out of the
    arena was fantastic.

One weird thing we experienced before the game.. the Thrashers love
their nickname of the Thrasher game experience - BLUELAND. But if
they really wanted to see BLUELAND - they could have stepped out into
the CNN Center during the couple of hours leading up to the game vs. the
Canadiens. The SEC tournament was also in town - next door at the Dome.
The CNN Center was teeming with SEC basketball fans from around the
South - but 97.6% of these fans were wearing the blue hue of the Kentucky
Wildcat. I would venture to say there were more Kentucky fans roaming
the CNN Center than other SEC team fans AND Thrasher fans combined.
Let me say - apparently the do not teach correct English OR manners at
Kentucky schools. I say that because the Kentucky fans I ran into (or ran
into me) didn't really have a grasp of either.

Next time - Jessica WINS tickets to see the Rangers @ Thrashers! To make
things better - it was Nascar night!

  • Thrashers Win in Regulation.. and podcast
    Tue, 27 Feb 2007 08:32:51 -0600
    Hello all,

I have to say - I had tennis practice last night, but I left very early
so I could come home and watch the Thrash at Boston in glorious
HD (high definition). I have seen a couple of Thrasher games in HD,
but not full HD (because the game was one of two or three at the
same time - and the marquis mathcup was in full HD).

Well, last night VS(Versus) HD featured an early and late game, so
the Thrashers/Bruins were in beautiful HD. I saw the final two periods
and LOVED the game. I loved everything about the game. The Thrash'
penalty kill, the power play was mostly on, Zhitnik and Tkachuk both
shined in their debuts.. it was a great night.

Don't get me wrong - I really, really like JP and Darren (the local Thrash
tv guys), but the VS telecast was very smooth. It has taken a season or
so, but their entire telecast from the studio show to the graphics, promos,
and of course the announcers were energetic and professional. Good news..
the Thrashers are featured one more time this season on VS HD - coming
in two weeks, Monday March 12 - The Thrashers host the Washington
Capitals at Philips Arena. That should be a very good game and broadcast.
I just hope the arena doesn't sell out - I think the Thrashers are WINLESS
when they sell out Philips Arena.. what's up with that?

Real quick about the podcast - I am actually holding out on the podcast
because I have found a way to do a weekly "broadcast" on the internet. It
would be a live show and I would be able to take calls and all that cool stuff.
Sounds good, huh? More details to follow.

    Be good,
    Kit

  • Thrashers and my pal, Johnnie
    Fri, 09 Feb 2007 16:04:54 -0600
I met a guy in Vegas back in 2000. I was there with Jess for the entire week
as we were getting married out there. We had a great time. Anyway, Johnnie
was a friend of Jess' family and was in town to attend the wedding.

Anyway, we became fast friends and kept in touch after that week. Although
he was in Vancouver and I am here in Atlanta. Emails, phone calls - lots of talk
about hockey and Jess' sister cemented our relationship. A great guy.

He had been to Atlanta once before a couple of years ago - we, of course saw a
couple of Thrashers games, had many hours of NHL 2005 on the xbox, and just
had a great time. We had made plans for him to visit for a week in November
of this past year. His folks didn't celebrate Thanksgiving, so we invited him
down for the week of, we would see a couple of games (of course), do the tourist
thing, and have a big meal with her parents. We were also going to have a mini-
Thanksgiving with just the three or four of us (if her sister wanted to join us).

He and I both travel a good bit for work. He more than I. So, sometimes it would
be a month or two between emails or calls. Didn't matter though - because as
soon as we got together, it was like we had been pals since elementary school.
With about a month to go before Johnnie arrives - Jess and I get a call from her
    mom. Johnny was dead.

Jess' mom was crying and speaking in Chinese to Jessica. We couldn't get any
details from her at all. Her mom was best friends with Johnnie's mom from back
in elementary school in China. Pretty much we were in the dark and devestated.
As a last ditch effort - and in hopes it was a big misunderstanding, I sent an email
to John simply saying - "Are you there?". A day or two later I got an email from
John's colleague in Vancouver - Stephane. He filled in all the blanks and although
Jess and I were comepletely in shock - he helped us understand the circumstances
    surrounding his best friends death.

In less than a month, his health had deteriorated from slight flu-like symptoms
to being diagnosed with liver cancer. In less than a month, his strength diminished
and he passed away on October 8. He will be sorely missed.

Last week, my Atlanta Thrashers visited GM Place and took on the Vancouver
Canucks. As much of a fan of the Thrash as I was - Johnnie was twice the nut for
his Canucks. This game is the only game of the season where I couldn't root for
the Thrashers. John and I had been talking up this game for the last couple of
years. The Canucks held on to win 3-2, and I am sure John was watching from
above - yelling something about how awesome Trevor Linden is. Gimme a break. :)

    Miss ya, bud.

  • Thrashers need to leave Philips to win
    Wed, 07 Feb 2007 14:20:24 -0600
A win is a win, no?

Maybe the Thrashers get a little stagefright when playing in front
of a packed Philips Arena? The last 6 sold out dates, the Thrashers
lose (including two losses against the worst team in the NHL).

Yet, they hit the road on a long Western road swing, and the first
night they hit the ice they take the Avalanche to the woodshed.
Another blogger mentioned when recalling the game that the Pepsi
Center was about as quiet last night as your average Hawks home
    game.

What a great game, though. Former Av Brad Larsen scored the
Thrasher goal. Greg deVries had two assists (of the first three
goals). Both Slava and Hoss had two goals each. All I have to say is
WHEW! While both have been contributing in their own ways - it
is very pleasant to see then gain their scoring touch. Also Kari was
playing lights-out yesterday. He made Jose Theodore look like a
rookie. I remember when he was fantastic between the pipes back
with Montreal and Chicago before that. I hope he can turn it around
a little - if he gets any playing time the rest of the season. We'll see.

Next up is a special game for me. Thrashers @ Vancouver. I will
    explain sometime tomorrow.

Done with jury duty - which was enjoyable. I am on vacation next
week - which will be enjoyable. So, things are looking up!

    take care,
    Kit

  • Thrashers looking better
    Wed, 07 Feb 2007 14:10:39 -0600
At this point in the season, I am watching Thrasher games a little more carefully than I was earlier in the season. In fact, I didn't watch a Thrashers game from start to finish until the first week of this year. With so many things going on in the last several months, I just haven't been able to devote a block of time where I can sit and watch my favorite sports team whip up on the competition. Case in point, last night I watched the game until right after we took the 2-1 lead on Jon Sim's pretty wrister. Then I had to retreat to my office to jump on a monthly work conference call which all my colleagues have to attend. I thought I would be sly and watch the game vis Comcast's website (which features a web streamed game telecast once a night or so), but the game was blacked out locally (DAMN TECHNOLOGY!). So, I had to settle for the downright depressing practice of opening up the official scoresheet linked from the Thrasher website. It refreshes every minute or so, and is a pretty good way to keep up with games when you have no other choice. So, as I listened to my boss conduct business, I watched as the Thrashers piled up 4 straight penalties, and gave up two goals late in the 2nd period.

Once the part of the call where I have to pay very close attention was over - I moved into my game room to watch the rest of the 3rd period (muted, of course) while I listen to the call.

Captian Mellanby scores (picking a sweet Hossa pass out of the air and smacking it in) and we are in business again. My call ends, and I get to watch the final 5 minutes, overtime and the shootout. Atlanta loses the shootout with two events you will not see very often:
    1) Kari giving up two straight goals in a shootout. and
    2) Both Slava Kozlov and Hoss missing shots on the other end. Hell, Slava missing alone is about as rare as it gets - much less both he and Hoss.

But a point was garnered, and we can feel pretty good as the team starts a hellish 6-game road swing which takes them out west. I am really looking forward to these next games (I look forward to all games, of course) because in past years the western swing was never televised by Turner South. This year, ALL the games out west are televised! Yee HAA! Colorado, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary - all on television.

Speaking of television - I LOVE JP Dellacamera. Not in that kind of way, but in a professional admiration for the way he announces Thrashers games kinda way. I thought the world had ended when Matt McConnell left Darren Elliot (and Atlanta) to take the same gig for the new Minnesota Wild tv team. So, Turner brings in this soccer guy? But, soon into that next season, I was hooked on the way JP calls hockey games. He and Darren have worked themselves into quite a team, and I wouldn't want it any other way. I am still crushed that Erin Andrews was let go. I won't get over that very easily - even though she is seen 10 times more now (on the 4-letter family of channels) than she ever was before working for Turner.

Hey, and speaking of Matt McConnell - I noticed he was back in Atlanta. He and former CNN Headline News sports guy Jerome Jurenovich host the pre and post-Thrashers "Thrashers Live". Last night was the first broadcasts - and they were fine. I am sure they will get better, and I look forward to a little more hockey talk before and after Thrash games. Now if we could just get more games in high-definition, THAT would be huge. I am guessing the Thrash' playoff games (or some of them at least) will be in HD. That would be fine with me. April cannot come soon enough. I just hope we can wake up Hossa and Slava's sticks and get them back in the scoring column soon! While getting in the playoffs would be sweet enough - I really want to hang (at least) a Southeast Division banner. You with me???

take care, and may all your pucks find the back of the net -

  • Random musings - Little People, Jury Duty, Thrashers
    Tue, 06 Feb 2007 08:48:40 -0600
OK. I am here in a small conference room surrounded by other tech-minded (or job-minded) individuals glued to their laptops - much like myself. I am on my second day of jury duty at the Cherokee County Courthouse in Canton, GA. They have a wireless network available, and they let jurors bring in their laptops - since there is alot of sitting around involved in jury duty. So, the last couple of weeks were a blur - but I also got a nice idea for my podcast which I will be recording this week sometime.

    1) The Thrashers are a Jeckyl/Hyde team. During the last week they had good performances against top teams from the Eastern Conference - but lost twice to the worst team in the NHL. The culprit? Lack of firepower on the PP. I do not know the numbers off the top of my head, but I do know that except for a nice PP performance at home against the Devils - the Thrash are downright horrible. And as bad as we look lately in 5-on-4 situations - we are worse when we have a 2-man advantage. What is that about? It also seems that when we give teams the same 2-man advantage, they score on us at will (again, except a recent game where we held up when down 2 men). Also, as I watch these games - it seems like lately the Thrash play worse when in front of a full home crowd. We'll see what happens tonight when they face the Eastern Conference leading Buffalo Sabres.

    2) Instead of seeing the Thrashers beat the Islanders a couple of Friday's ago - I watched Cirque du Soliel at Atlantic Station with my lovely wife. It was one of her Christmas Gifts and I couldn't get out of it. I am glad though, because we had a great evening. A nice meal at California Pizza Kitchen, a good show, a clear cool eveing to walk around in. It was very nice. We even got to pet a couple of beautiful pugs that were sitting outside the California Pizza Kitchen. Their owner had gone inside, and had tied them to a rail. They sat very politely while all the masses whizzed around. Being the dog lover I am, I swooped in and gave them both a little lovin'. There was a black one and a fawn one, "Bailey" and "Bogey". They were very well behaved - I know Sugar would be going nuts with all the people around. These dogs must get walked in high traffic areas all the time. Anyway - the high point of the Cirque was a pair of little people featured predominantly in the show. I will have to devote more time on the blog to these cats later.. but let me say, they were (dare I say) adorable.

    3) The South Carolina basketball team teased alot of us by rattling off two straight wins over SEC West teams (Arkansas and Mississippi State). This was after a narrow loss at top-25 Tennessee. The team is getting better, but honestly they had nowhere else to go but up. Since then, they have lost to Auburn by 5 and at top-20 Alabama by 3. It doesn't get any easier - the next opponent is top-25 Kentucky in Lexington. Didn't they beat the 'Cocks in Columbia by 30 or more?

    4) You know how some people classify movies as either "In Theater" or "Rental"? Jess and I do. "Yeah, that movie looks interesting, but I will wait on the rental". Or - "We have to see that in the theater". Well, Jess and I are starting to rent more movies nowadays (since we joined Blockbuster Total Access), and we want to try our hand at being movie reviewers. So, during the next podcast - a segment of the cast will be devoted to us reviewing movies you MAY not have seen yet. Sure, you saw Pirates of the Carribean, or MI:3 - but you may not have seen "Little Miss Sunshine", or "Employee of the Month". Maybe we can help you with a good flick for a cold winter night, no? Hey, we are just trying to help.

That's all for now, they are calling names.. it may be my turn to be take part in the justice system! I had a good time yesterday. Not "FUN" but it was pleasant, and I learned something. Not only that, I am getting paid 25 bones a day. Sweet.

  • Bad Sports
    Thu, 01 Feb 2007 23:05:01 -0600
No, the title isn't referring to the Thrashers losses against Philadelphia and
the NY Islanders this week - but I guess it could be. More on that in a later
    podcast.

First of all, I play tennis. Lots of it. My subdivision actually has 4 mixed doubles
teams playing ALTA winter ball. My team and another team are in the same
division (pretty rare unless you are like mega-huge Bridgemill which has 30+
ALTA teams), and we played each other this weekend.

My team is made up of friends, and while Jess and I are new to the team from
Summer, the team has been together for a couple of years now. In fact, it was
the first tennis team of any kind in Brookshire. The other team in our division
is made up of all the good guys from my city championship men's team (minus
one who is on my team). They also have an A-level player from another sub.
If it was just his guys vs. mine, they would kill us.

Anyway, my team took 3 out of our first 4 matches (out of 5 total). Good guys win!
But, Line 5 pitted Jess and I vs. the other captain and a very good girl named Jill.
Jill actually was trained at the Nick Bolliteri school in Florida as a kid. Now, she is
a mother and doesn't play as much as she wants - but can still blister the ball. Having
Jill down at 5 was seriously sandbagging for him - Jill could probably beat all the girls
on his team, but one. Tim is probably the 5th best guy on the team - so it worked out.

I have beaten Tim every other time I have played him but one. Singles, doubles..
doesn't matter. He is not a good player - but he thinks he is a step below a touring
professional. I probably took the match a little less seriously than I should have.
Mix that in with the 40 degree temps and 30 mph wind - and Jess and I got a slow start
losing the first set 6-3 and down 0-3 in the second set.

Then we started playing smart and hitting it to the weak link every time. On most
mixed doubles teams, the weak link is the girl. It isnt fair, that is just the way it is.
On this day however, the weak link was Tim. Wildly inconsistant, and tries to hit
winners 100% of the time. We clawed back to win the 2nd set 6-3.

The third set started 1-1, and with us up 40-0, Jess hit a great shot right between
Jill and Tim. Tim gave chase to the ball, running after it and whiffing as he tried to
hit the ball in vein. He yelled as he continued to run.. realizing they have lost 8 of the
last 9 games to us. As he ran by the scoreboard, he took his racket and tomahawk
chopped it right down the middle - shattering it into pieces. Continued to run, then
bounced into the fence and stopped himself. Then he comes up limping.

I knew this guy was a insufferable blowhard. I knew this guy thought his game was
much better than mine (even though he has never taken more than 1 GAME from
me in a 2 set singles match). I know he tends to blow his top.. but I sat there in
utter disbelief that he would be such a baby. I looked to my teammates bundled in
their blankets and mouthed the words "What the fuck was that?". In the end, it
was typical for this guy - and I should have seen it coming.

He lost control, he says, when his knee gave out while he ran. He tried to use the
scoreboard to break his fall, and accidently broke it. Now his leg is hurt. Very damn
convenient - now that we have effectively taken control of the match - which we
ended up winning in the third set 6-3. He hobbled around for the rest of the match
like he had stepped on a landmine. 2 hours later, he played a 3-set T2 match with
no difficulty in movement, no apperent pain or struggle - and not one word about
the injury, or the beating he and his team took hours earlier.

Anyway - he stuck to his story about an apperent injury and never would admit
breaking the scoreboard on purpose. His well-constructed team lost to my band of
friends 4-1. He didn't like it one bit - especially thinking he was going to take 3 or 4
    from us.

  • Life just isn't fair.
    Fri, 26 Jan 2007 09:11:05 -0600
    Hello friends,

I try to be the best husband I can be. I love my wife very much. She is
quite honestly, the greatest wife in the world. She has sat through more
tennis matches, Gamecock football games, Thrasher games , etc. etc. etc.
than any wife should have to. In return, I try to do nice things for her.
Case in point - over Christmas, we had a $100 limit on how much we could
spend on each other (not counting a $20 limit for each others stockings).
I burned through the $100 pretty quickly. I also knew she REALLY wanted
to see Cirque while it was here in town. So, I was going to try and make it
    happen.

Of course, since I didn't get tickets 6 months ago - they are all sold out. Ebay
fools are charging an arm and a leg for duckets - so I figure she will have to wait
til next time. So, we are cruising around the local Costco location after lunch
on a weekday, and I am checking my email on my Treo. I get an email from the
Cirque Club (I had joined several years back upon advice of a good friend)
saying that they are adding 4 more dates to the Atlanta Cirque show. So, I
immediately tell Jess we have to rush home NOW (using the excuse that I got
an email from my crazy boss and she needs something done right this very second).
So, we race home, I immediately go and buy tickets - and get FRONT ROW tix
for face value. How about those apples? Christmas is complete and Kit is a hero.

Fast forward past Christmas a couple of weeks - and I notice my favorite sports
team (your Atlanta Thrashers) are putting together a "Blogger's Night" sometime
soon. They invite several area bloggers to Philips, put them in the press box for
the game, feed them, and let them blog about the game while they are there. Oh,
and they also get to hob-nob with Thrashers announcers and players too. WHAT?
Can this be true? They might as well called it "Kit's Dream Night" because that is
almost a dream scenario for me (short Hooter's girls and cold beer - but other than
that - it sounded incredible, no?). So, I signed up. A couple of weeks later, it is announced
that the "Blogger's Night" is this Friday night vs. the Islanders. I race upstairs to tell Jess
the good news. That is when she laid the hammer down on your old pal, Kit.

Friday night is Cirque de Soliel. So, not only can I not go to the "Kit Baty Dream Night",
I also am not going to be able to see or hear the game either. But, Jess deserves a fun
night - and I am going to deliver. "Super Husband" to the rescue.
    "More wine, Jessica?"
"Can I get you a Cirque program, Jessica?"

"Hold your coat while you powder your nose, Jessica?"

Although I would MUCH rather be a couple of miles south watching a different
group of Canadians - Jessica will leave Cirque a very happy lady tonight - I promise.
And with any luck, I can still catch a little of the 3rd period on the radio as we drive home.

    Au revoir!

  • Whatever happened to Donald Audette?
    Mon, 22 Jan 2007 16:46:14 -0600
I visit the Thrashers website every day, and while I am there, I check out a
very cool area called the Blueland Blog (www.atlantathrashers.com - then
click on Blueland Blog). Most days, the blog "meister" known as "Web
Guy" throws down some knowledge about upcoming games, or a game that
just transpired or whatever. Always very good stuff - and alot of times stuff
    that makes you go "hmmmmm".

On Game Days, he offers a trivia question. Answer the trivia question correctly
and you go in the mix for a pair of tickets for that nights game. Often times I will
answer the question, correctly of course - but haven't won the tickets yet.

Anyway, last week the question had to do with past Thrasher All Stars in honor
of this year's all star Marian Hossa and young star Kari Lehtonen. Simply, who
were the Thrasher's All Stars of the past. Not a difficult question - there haven't
been many. I rattled off the answer right away - but then I started thinking..
    whatever happened to Donald Audette?

Donald Audette came to the Thrashers from the Kings after 8 seasons as a star for the Sabres. He was the 2001 All Star rep from the Thrashers in a season where he netted his career-high 34 goals and 45 assists. He then was traded to back to the Sabres - as most of our stars were early on. At the time, Audette became the first Sabres player ever to leave the Sabres via trade, and also return via trade. He then made stops in Dallas, Montreal
and lastly in Florida before retiring in 2004.

While in Montreal he suffered a major injury where his left forearm was skated over by New York Ranger Radek Dvorak. Audette had severed several tendons and required surgery to repair. He was out nearly 3 months, but miraculously returned to the lineup in time for the playoffs.

After fairly non-eventful seasons of '02-03 and '03-04 years of knee injuries finally caught
up with him, and he retired after a half-season with the Florida Panthers.

I wonder where he is now. If anyone knows, please let me know at kit@kitbaty.com

Another answer to that same question was the Thrasher's first All Star - Petr Buzek.
He was traded to Calgary in 12/01 (for one of my all time favorite Thrashers, Jeff Cowan).
He was with the Flames for a couple of seasons before returning to his homeland of
Czechoslovakia in 2003 and has since played with Czech Extraliga. I attended a Thrasher
player lunch at Killer Creek Chophouse in January of 2000 . Players there included
Yannick Tremblay, Kelly Buchburger and Petr Buek (and maybe "Whitey Stapleton").
I asked Petr who was better between he and fellow rookie All Star Scott Gomez. He said "I
don't care". OK, Petr - how excited are you about the All Star game? "Again, I don't care -
it is just another game." Thanks Petr - I better go, I see my creme brulee is being served.

All Star Week is this week! Enjoy the festivities, and we'll see Thrashers back in action
    on Friday against the Isles.

  • Five Guys Burgers and Fries!!
    Sun, 21 Jan 2007 22:06:57 -0600
If you have ever spent alot of time in the DC metroplex, and I am
talking weeks - not just a weekend or so.. you have probably visited
a Five Guys. It is nothing special to look at. It is just a burger joint
that started in Northern Virginia 20+ years ago. The menu isn't
very big, in fact it has probably about 10 items - but the food you
come back for is the best part.

I go to DC for business quite alot. I was also there for 2 weeks last
summer for training. Down the street from my hotel was a non-assuming
Five Guys. I went in looking for a good burger. I GOT IT and then some.
The bacon cheeseburger and fries were the best I have ever tasted. I
went back 4 times during my stay - and loved every visit.

Up until about 4 years ago - there were only 3 locations. All in or
near Alexandria, VA (the location I visited was one). Then the brothers
who started Five Guys started aggressively franchising their stores.
Just last summer a handful of Five Guys opened here in metro Atlanta.
None near me of course - but I was so excited about my new find that
I dragged Jessica to the nearest 5G location a half-hour away in
Alpharetta. She loved it as well. I go about once a month now.. and everytime
I go to DC - since there is one less than a mile from my usual hotel in Germantown, MD.

Anyway, driving home from a tennis match yesterday I noted a new sign out
front of a development that has been taking shape for months now. It is near the
corner of Interstate 575 and Towne Lake Parkway across from the 66 gas station.
I have known for a while that a Walgreen's was going up - but had no idea of anything
else that would be in this mixed-use shopping center. The newly placed sign might
have said other things on it - hell, it could have said "Kit Baty, come in today and say
hello and I will give you a million dollars" - but all I saw was "Coming Soon - Five Guys".
    Yee haaw!

When they open, I will be first in line. Once I eat there, I will post how awesome it
was and give you photographic proof that this place will serve you the best burger
and fries you have ever had. Did I mention it was also a BARGAIN? I will gush very
briefly about this fantastic news on my new podcast coming soon to an iPod (or other
listening device) near you. Until then - go to their website and find a location near
you - and GO THERE!!! www.fiveguys.com

    take care,

  • Podcast coming back!
    Sun, 21 Jan 2007 21:42:39 -0600
    Happy 2007 everyone.

I am glad you are here to check in on what I have been up to. I hope everyone
had a tremendous holiday season and a great start to the New Year.

As I stated above, over the next 2 weeks or so I am kicking the blog into high
gear. New web page, new look, more frequency - maybe even a daily entry
(imagine that!). I also will broaden the focus from sports to more of a blog about
"guy" stuff. You know - sports, but also food and other crap. But - mostly sports
    and food.

I will also reinstate the SSW Podcast. It will be weekly, and also be more "guy"
oriented. It will be a little shorter than my original SSW podcast from the last
couple of years - probably 10 minutes instead of 30. But, I will also do my best
to improve the quality (both content and sound) of the podcast.

The new podcast will debut in the next week. I can already tell you I will gush
about a new favorite restaurant (and the fact that it is coming to Woodstock!!!),
and we will have lots of Thrashers talk as well as a little football talk as well. So,
please tune in - won't you?

    take care,

    Kit

  • It was a good day
    Mon, 26 Jun 2006 16:04:10 -0500
First of all, it is Monday and Axel and LEslie (from my 99X rant yesterday) were not in again today. So, no iMac given away. Maybe tomorrow.

So, Jess comes down about 11am or so, and asks me if I want to have lunch out somewhere. We have been trying to save money lately, so whenever she offers to take me to lunch, I jump at it. Anyway, she takes me to FOGO de CHAO. This folks, is my favorite Atlanta restaurant. Pay 30 bucks, and it is ALL YOU CAN EAT MEAT. It is a Brazillian steakhouse, and the guys bring around different cuts of meat for you to enjoy. And they do not stop until you tell them to stop. It is a glorious thing. There are only two small things wrong with Fogo de Chao...

    1. It used to be $19 for lunch, then 22 then 25 now it is $30 bucks for lunch. We never go for dinner - because it is 50 bucks. But, despite the cost, it is well worth the cash. Jess and I have tried about half the other Brazillian churrascarrias in town, and they all suck. Don't waste time anywhere else. Just save your pennies and go to Fogo.
    2. The sodas they serve are in 6oz glass bottles. That is good, I love Diet Coke in a glass bottle. But a 6oz. bottle might as well be a thimble to me.. and it is $2.10 every time! So, 3 sodas = well over 6 bucks when you addin tax and tip. So, I have a soda and then go with tea or water the rest of the meal.

Regardless of those tiny shortcomings, the place rocks the house and I am telling you to turn off your computer and go. NOW!

  • No more podcast, but the blog lives on
    Sun, 25 Jun 2006 18:29:28 -0500
    Hello everyone!

If you are reading this, you must have subscribed via a blog reader a long time ago, and forgot to unsubscribe to the SSW or something. Anyway, this is just a brief blog entry to let everyone my status.

I have been traveling alot with work recently. Things have been very hectic. And, as you have surmised by now, I have stopped the podcast. I may begin it again sometime soon - but for now, I will just rant via blog for a little while.

Also, the blog will always have sports in it - but I will also use it to bitch about other pursuits. FOr instance - my recent airtime at 99x.

I used to be a HUGE fan of 99X. I was a fan of Power 99 before that. But when they threw the switch and started with the alternative programming back in 1992 - I was HOOKED! Nowadays I listen to the Regular Guys on 96Rock. While I HATE "classic rock" and think it is pretty luch for rednecks and guys who drove camaros in high school - the morning show is very funny most of the time. While I used to listen to the 99X morning show - over the last 4 or 5 years it has slid into a terrible state. Now, with ownership changes and shit going down over there, a former college buddy Axel (Andy Lowe) and Leslie Fram are the morning show. Andy is good at what he does - when he does afternoon drive. Leslie is good at programming music - but as a morning show - they suck.

Anyway, they have been running a contest where people can send in a 60 second "aircheck" of themselves talking up songs, reading "reads" or whatever. Each day they pick the "best" and that winner gets a new iMac. The best of the best at the end of the week wins a on-air shift at 99X. I sent one in every day. They got better as the week went on. On Wednesday one of my cuts was aired. I always thought I had a shot to win. The winners (and 3 or 4 qualifiers) on Monday and Tuesday (and back in March when they did this contest last time) SUCKED! They sounded horrible - and I KNEW I was better. But for some reason on Wednesday when mine was one of the qualifiers - the other qualifiers were AWESOME. Fucking radio-quality talent talking up songs and sounding great. Where did these fuckers come from? Why wasn't I pitted against some other scrubs like the ones who were winning the days prior to this? Shit.

Anyway, since Axel and Leslie were out Friday - they have one more iMac to give away and I sent probably my best one to them on Thursday night. So, wish me luck.

That's all I got. Until next time.

  • Boy, did this week stink!
    Mon, 02 Jan 2006 22:06:37 -0600
Yes, I saw the Independence Bowl. Stop bugging me.

How come I can't be happy for my school without some punk telling
me about how the Gamecocks played in the second half of ONE GAME?
You see one Gamecock game this year and then feel like you can talk
to me intellegently about the Carolina offense?

I also am battling a little stomach flu, so I am feeling especially
crappy right now.. no pun intended.

Just recorded a pretty good podcast. We talk about the NFL, the
Thrashers, and of course.. this past weekend where everything went
to hell in a hand-basket! Next week has to be better, right?

Enjoy - and if you have a chance.. vote for us at PodcastAlley.com

  • Bowl Madness, and the elusive XBOX 360!
    Wed, 28 Dec 2005 20:12:03 -0600
Don't get me started Clempson fans.. you played quite possibly
the lamest of lame duck teams in recent bowl history and still
only squeeked out a 9 point win (by virtue of a late TD). The
team had no offense.. yes, less than yours. The Tiger Red Zone
offense is horrible - and for your sake, I hope that it gets
better with the start of the Will Proctor era at Death Valley.
As for me - the Champs Bowl has robbed me of two hours I will
    never get back.

I have a new podcast uploaded. I am sorry it is late, but I couldn't
record one in Beaufort. Topics include the Thrashers, Clemson
and Colorado (the JV Buffs), Thursday and Friday Bowls (OH BOY!)
    and other crap! Enjoy!

    Oh, and Happy New Year.

  • Jessica chimes in on the latest SSW!! Goodie!
    Tue, 20 Dec 2005 20:02:23 -0600
    Hello everyone.

In a very special episode of the Southern Sports Weekly.. all the kids
are calling it "the Weekly".. anyway, in the latest SSW, JESSICA joins
Kit for a little sports bitching! How fun is that? She names atheletes
she knows, and chimes in on the Falcons chances of making the playoffs.
All this wile drinking beer! Screw you FCC!

Anyway here is the link to the podcast - download at your leisure!

Enjoy the podcast - I welcome comments on Jessica's first time on the
mic at ssw@kitbaty.com. Let me know what you thought!

We are taking the show on the road for the holidays, and I will record
the next podcast with my mother LIVE (sorta) from Beaufort, SC. It just
keeps getting better!! DOn't miss it!

Have a great week and be good!

  • Has anyone gotten a 360 yet?
    Sat, 17 Dec 2005 09:56:12 -0600
I'm just curious. I have been hitting stores when the doors
open for a week now and I haven't seen one. Not one. I am
hearing and reading stores like Target, Wal Mart and Costco
are getting them in here and there - but none around here.
Supposedly tomorrow Best Buy will have plenty to sell. The
question is - is that 48 "plenty" or 300 "plenty". We'll see.

Monday/Tuesday podcast is all set.. I have some great tidbits
that will make the 30 minutes fly by. I am looking forward to
sharing with you.. here is a sampler..

    Chick-Fil-A delicious? Yes. Smart? No.
Rod Gardner released? Other First round busts.
Hawks - learning how to win? Maybe.
What are the bowls giving as gifts to the players? I know
and will fill you in on the next SSW!

Have a great weekend. Remember those Wendy's cups.. and send
    me an email - ssw@kitbaty.com!!!

  • Who doesn't like Wendy's??? Huh?
    Thu, 15 Dec 2005 21:28:26 -0600
Sure, their fries suck. But come on! Those square burgers which fit perfectly
under the cheese.. those frosty cold.. um.. frostys.. and the Spicy Chicken
Sandwich sent down from the heavens? Wendy's is great. So, make sure to head on
by your neighborhood Wendy's, load up on grub, get plenty of beverages, and send
your old pal Kit those coupons.. please!

Anyway, brand new podcast this evening.. I know it is a couple of days late, but
hey.. you are gonna get one again in a couple of days anyway! The goodness just
    keeps on rollin!

I did the show in one take, and we cover some topical items.. including letters
from Tommy Bowden and Steve Spurrier (not to me, to their respective fan bases)..
Hell Freezes Over (December 13, 2005), Tyra Banks and America's Top Model, and
the hunk of plastic that continues to mock AND amaze me.. the XBOX 360. All that
and more - just listen, will ya?

Take care, and be sure to come back and get the next SSW on either Monday or Tuesday! It will be loaded chock full of Bowl Week goodness! And Dan Reeves TOO!

    Baty, OUT!

  • New Podcast! That's right, I said it.
    Tue, 06 Dec 2005 09:01:49 -0600
Greetings everyone. I have recorded my first podcast in several months.
Please download and listen to it at your leisure. And, if I must say so..
    it isn't too bad.

I have tweaked the format a little, and I got a new microphone.. not that
it makes a difference. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.

My podcast has been featured in a new O'Reilly book called "Podcasting Hacks". I have my copy, and it has taught me a few things. I highly recommend it. Here is a link - go buy it from Amazon.

Also, if you eat at Wendy's you may have noticed the cups aren't yellow anymore. The cups are blue with AirTran jets on them. They are running a promotion and if you do not mind, please save the cups for me (more specifically, the coupons on the cups). I fly AirTran for business and pleasure.. and could use the coupons. If you have the chance to save some for me, please send them to me at

  • College Football Friday - 9/9/2005
    Fri, 09 Sep 2005 14:24:31 -0500
New podcast for the second week of the college football season!

We talk about the three "Games of the Week", quickly preview other SEC and ACC games, chat about Baton Rouge and a new LSU-centered podcast, and some news and notes. Next Friday's SSW will be full of stuff. I was a tad bit unprepared for this
cast. But - IT HAD TO BE DONE!

It is also Jess and my 5th wedding anniversary. How she has put up with me for this
long.. I have no idea. But I am greatly appreciative of her support.

Have a great weekend - unless you are a Dawg, I hope your team stomps the opponent!

  • NEW PODCAST!!
    Fri, 02 Sep 2005 15:41:26 -0500
Not much time to talk.. still on the road between Greenville and
Atlanta - but here is the latest podcast recorded yesterday at the
    W-B before the USC/UCF game.

More next week - have a GREAT WEEKEND.

  • First Podcast in a while...
    Thu, 01 Sep 2005 07:19:10 -0500
    Greetings.

Today is Thursday September 1. In 12 hours, the Gamecocks
will take the field against the U of Central Florida.

I realize that it has been over a month since my last
podcast - and I truly apologize. I have been busier than I
have ever been before (except for my Air Force days).

Today I will record my first podcast in a while - live from
the SC State Fairgrounds - where I will be tailgating before
the big game. Please be sure to look for the podcast tomorrow
    (Friday Spetember 2).

I truly hope all the folks in the Louisiana, Mississippi and
Alabama areas effected by Hurricane Katrina are ok. My LSU
friend John Guyotte from Baton Rouge.. hope all is well and
if you can - drop me an email.

Also - if you haven't yet - please give to the Red Cross
    Hurricane Relief Effort. www.redcross.org

A special note to folks in the Columbia, SC area.. I have filled
my tank to drive to the game today. Is there enough gas in Cola
so I can get back home? If not - who wants to host my wife and I
until the Columbia area gets fuel again? We are clean folks, do
not smoke, and are usually quiet.. except Jessica does snore. If you
can help - please email me at ssw@kitbaty.com

    GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!! COCKS!!!!!!!!!

  • "Im so far behind, I thought I was in front"
    Wed, 20 Jul 2005 21:33:29 -0500
I am sitting in the Holiday Inn Biltmore East in Asheville, NC. Why?
Because a hurricane washed out Jess and mines vacation. We are taking
the Cancun vacation in late November - in the meantime, we decided to
go to the mountains and relax. So, after aday in Greenville, SC we
headed up to Asheville. We will go back to Greenville for a day or two
before getting back to Atlanta on Saturday.

Anyway, I just recorded a quick podcast to let you know what I just
typed above. Not much sports in this one folks.. except that the Rome
Braves (Single-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves) are in town to play
the Asheville Tourists, and staying in this hotel. Cool. Anyway, here
    is the link...

I also will not be recording another podcast until Monday. Im sorry!
but, when I do record the next SSW on Monday - it will be a doosie!
I promise. Until then, enjoy the rest of the week, have a great weekend
and I'll catch up with you on Monday!

  • College Football - Saturday?
    Fri, 15 Jul 2005 17:01:57 -0500
Yes, I am afraid so. I had alot of work today, and with my Cancun
vacation literaly blown away - Jess and I have been scrambling. So,
we are in town this weekend and off to Ponta Vedra, FL on Monday for
a little beach action. I know it's not Cancun.. but it will do until
we can get to Cancun again - in November.

Anyway - give me until tomorrow and I will fire off another College
    Football Extravaganza SSW! Stay tuned!
