Last Wednesday, I performed my annual gig at the Very Special Arts Festival at the Los Angeles Music Center. It took me back in time, to ten years ago when I taught the art of mime to school kids. One day while teaching at a school with "normal" kids I had a "unifying experience" when everyone in the room saw the "magic hand" that materialized right in front of our very eyes...

My Mom was an only child too. Growing up alone in Burbank her best friend was "Heckle & Jeckle's Mom," also my Dad's sister. When the "pre-boomers" grew-up, they were of course, competitive about their kids. My Mom was frustrated that I wasn't as "smart" as "Heckle & Jeckle," so one time she took it out on me....

When I was eight, my parents signed me up for East Valley Trojans "Pop Warner Football". We played in mini replica uniforms, like the one my hero O.J. Simpson used to wear at USC. The memories include Gatorade in glass bottles, the Universal Sheraton and my nickname "Killer."

My Dad told me to hit bullies "with all you've got," but my cousins "Heckle & Jeckle" would still beat me into submission during pillow fights. When "Heckle & Jeckle" moved to England, my family took a "road trip" to visit the Loch Ness Monster.... Back in The States, I still wore my new Kilt, because I wanted to be a "Trojan Warrior"....

My dad is a character. He loved Laurel and Hardy as a kid and hung out at Bob's Big Boy with James Stacy as a teenager.... Plus my dad had two notorious uncles. One uncle was the Head G-Man for Warner Bros. during the Red Scare. The other uncle tried to save Barbara Graham and hung with Mickey Cohen...

When I was a four, I saw the movie True Grit and instantly bought into the whole legend of the "The Duke". At the same time, The Vietnam War raged on the TV, while I sat alone in my parents' dank den, building Lego forts for my Army Men. Through it all, I was always dressed as a cowboy.... My parents solution for my isolation was to get me a St. Bernard, and that's when the trouble really started....

Chapter 2 of our story "King of the Boys" takes us back to my earliest memories of Dodger Stadium and Huckleberry Hound. More importantly, I remember my Mexican and Native American Grandpa who was a rough and tumble Cowboy, who often worked as a bartender in Reno, Nevada.... Back in my childhood and even now, he represents my only deep connection to my past. I wanted to be just like him....
