    Sun, 1 Jul 2007 17:09:00 GMT Author: twoguysnamedjoe@gmail.com

    Episode 47 Show Notes
Where Ed an Joe demonstrate 1st hand what podfading is... Podfading according to the Urban Dictionary:
A podcast that after a while becomes less and less frequently updated and then blinks out altogether. Alternately a podcast that is going strong and suddenly stops.
Well, that's us. We're fading off.
Listen and hear how and why. Meet us over at TheGreenTax. The Green Tax is the money you pay extra to live a life green. >trademark.

2gnj Episode 45: Privacy, do you really have it?
    Fri, 15 Jun 2007 21:18:00 GMT Author: twoguysnamedjoe@gmail.com

    Episode 45 Show Notes
Where Ed and Joe talk with Leonard (CISSP) about Privacy and that you don't have it anymore in today's connected world.

What is your reasonable expectation of privacy when your information is all over the place, information that you've provided knowingly, but maybe unaware about all the places that that information will end up.

Participating in a customer loyalty program means serving the Mini Mes of the world.

Who cares if they know you bought their books or not?

Social engineering based on the information easily accessible on the internet can lead to your identity being lifted.

Social networking Web 2.0 sites, like MySpace.com are littered with social information waiting to be used to gleam a false identity.

Understand what information is out there, and consciously choosing what information you're willing to provide / allow to be out there to places like video rental stores.

Creating a false identity is a federal crime.

Make up your own security question / answer. e.g. what street were you born on? Venus is a butterfly.

Use an arbitrary question and password for web registrations and keep them in a freely available and encrypted software safe, e.g. passwordsafe, roboform.

Ask for the courtesy card, or someone else like the person behind you in the grocery store.

Try putting your phone number into Google in the form (999) 999-9999. There's a link to remove your name form google lookup.

Economics. Businesses aren't properly incentivizaed to protect my information.

Use a credit card when buying something online. It's federally mandated that if there are fraudulent charges on the visa, they bank has to eat it.

Identities for sale online for $14 < $18. They're so cheap because there's so many of them out there.

    Quotes from this episode:

    • There are things that are against the law and then there are things that are criminal.
    • no thank you.
    • who's your daddy?
    • I've got lots of maiden names.
    • Venus is a butterfly.
    • I provide the same information to nothing.
    • One more thing...

2gnj Episode 44: Motivations for converting your diesel car to run on vegetable oil.

    Episode 44 Show Notes
The anniversary show, where we play a memory of episode 1. Then, Ed and Joe talk about why one would be motivated to convert their diesel car to use vegetable oil ( not same as biodiesel ).

    • cutting cost to drive
    • doing it for the earth, lower the carbon footprint
    • lower our dependence on foreign oil
    • vegetable oil is a renewable resource, and
    • because Joe wants a Prius.
The government is not supportive of you converting to use alternate energy because they're losing revenue on you buying gas.

    Quotes from this episode:

    • i got to pull down larry's pants...did you do it kneeling?
    • is that extra black?
    • you hand it to em, and take their money?
    • motivations for vegetable oil conversions...
    • sexual reassignment surgery
    • LA seems to be the area for conversions.
    • don't punish us for trying to make the earth more green.
    • oooooh, french friesssszz...the vegetable car...
    • :) I got it right :) yea for Ed.
    • why don't you just buy a car that gets 46 mpg ?
    • our buddy the sun.
    • use your phone device thingy, and call the show.

2gnj Episode 43: The technology of memory.
    Sat, 2 Jun 2007 03:18:00 GMT Author: twoguysnamedjoe@gmail.com

    Episode 43 Show Notes
where ed and joe talk about what it takes to train the brain.

    common memorization techniques:

    • the linking technique.
    • telling a story
    • singing a song
    • doing a poem
    • massaging the hands
    • associating with the senses
    • peglists
    • rote
    • neumonic is not heuristic. heuristic is what joe was trying to remember to say.
    • memory is
    1) encoding, parsing, interpolate, or otherwise perceive things
    2) storing the memory
    3) recall
the most important part is (1)

    • you need to pay attention to what you want to remember.
    • short term vs. long term memory
    • recall is easier if your brain is in the same state (emotional / alertness) as when it was encoding the memory.
    • linking concepts with the senses
      • hearing
      • smelling
      • taste
      • sight
    • memory is easier to remember if it's consistent with your need to make sense out of things.
    • you remember what makes sense, not really what happened, e.g. the witness and the ambulance.
    • ed smells to go back to 1st grade.
    • the Pavlovian classical condition of trigger / response.
    • waitresses and waiters can remember a big table's set of orders, how?
    • 7 is the magic number, a good semantic chunk.

    Quotes from this episode:

    • new hampshire is a hampster
    • the sillier, the more destructive and memorable it is the better.
    • a chain made into a belt is more fashionable, no, making it explode, that * would be memorable !
    • garbage in is garbage out
    • don't do what i said

2gnj Episode 41: The tech of Green
    Fri, 18 May 2007 19:13:00 GMT Author: twoguysnamedjoe@gmail.com

    Episode 41 Show Notes
Where Ed and Joe discuss the technology of GREEN.

to be GREEN is a choice:

    • buy a car with better mpg, or like a hybrid.
    • to be green means to have less impact, to be good to the earth, like tread light, to be carbon neutral, to use less resources, or a sustainable resource, e.g. corn fuel, vegi oil, etc.
    • the CA tree hugger car pool sticker for hybrids, govt. subsidy, promote use of alternate fuels, etc.
    • the GREEN Tax, expect to pay more to be green friendly, not a good solution for promoting movement toward the moral good of green. sigh
    • working the return on investment equation makes it obvious that buying a prius is not to save money
    a common thread:
    • being a steward of the earth
    • being eco friendly
    • having low impact
    • alternate fuels
    • shift to using sustainable resources
alternate fuel sources aren't efficient, cost too much:
    • big fans, windmills, fan farms...
    • hydro energy
    • solar panels, tap into the grid, credit on electricity fed back into the grid

Imagine a president that set a national goal to be eco friendly

    things you can do now:

    • replace incandescent bulbs with high efficiency fluorescents
    • replace furnace with high efficiency furnace
    • replace manual thermostat with a programmable thermostat
    a typical dilemma:
    • it takes more overall energy to recycle, it costs more, it smells, it's stinky, it takes time
    • why do it then? so as to not process the earth from nice pretty resources to ugly smelly land fills? to keep the bottles and cans off the road?
    the transition is hard:
    • returning cans to the store during the first years of the MI law
If laws would be passed to make it cost more to not be green than to be green, people will be green... e.g. cigarette smoking drops when the cost of a pack of cigarettes goes up.

    who's against us being green?

    • fuel cos
    • auto cos
    • etc.
Technology innovations can close the gap between cost / benefit equation that drives people to not choose to be eco friendly
    • e.g. turning the car off when engine not needed, to be effectively restarted instantaneously

    Quotes from this episode:

    • To be green means to be techy.
    • Green is in, go green go white go green go white....
    • did your dog just fart?
    • people are part of the ecosystem, get with it
    • be careful, you're talking about large people
    • working the equation
    • hot air rises
    • if you're using less energy, you're paying less for that energy
    • before the gore man
    • we're not a meijer's
    • incentivized
    • how are we going to make a hummer?
    • we'll be in the Stud-i-o, because that's where the studs are....

    Points to consider:
    * security
    * ease of use
    * extentions
    * you have to disable security in order to make it work
    * can you extend it and make it behave differently, if you want
    * huh? disconnected tabs
    * there is no ie7 for macs or linux

    Quotes from this episode:
    "E for Enternet"
    "I am a usability bitch."
"After you click on it, you will know what it does."
    "Firefox is the shit."

    The Platypus Firefox extension:
    See Instructions for Platypus installation.

It's not really so much an extension as it is a "user script" that's added into Firefox via the Greasemonkey Firefox add-on / extension.

Read the platypus download page with installation instructions.  It leads you through adding the monkey extension first, etc., complete with links.

2gnj Episode 14: Why you should not buy books from Amazon.com
    Thu, 2 Nov 2006 11:30:00 GMT Author: twoguysnamedjoe@gmail.com
    Episode 14 Show Notes:
Ed and Joe discuss what to look for when buying things on the internet. They discuss phishing and how to keep yourself safe on the world wide web.

When buying things from Amazon.com, do the following:
    1. Never click on a link in an email.
    1. Go to the site yourself and not by clicking a link on an email.
    2. Log in and verify that you are in secure mode in your browser by seeing a padlock and the color of your address bar changes.

Phishing is a term used when other people are trying to get information (or fish information) out of you by pretending to be someone they are not.

    Quotes from this episode:
    "Joseph Hershey Wishlist"
"You go to whitehouse.com looking for Bush, and you find bush."
