- CoasterRadio.com #302 - Our Third Anniversary Podcast
Sat, 26 Apr 2008 00:50:00 GMT
We launched CoasterRadio.com on April 25, 2005 with a podcast that was frankly a liitle rough around the edges. But what followed has been three years of good times on-line and at the parks. A lot has changed in three years, but we're back today with a brand new podcast to celebrate the occasion. Mario, Flava and I don't spend a lot of time looking back, but we do spend time talking about some of the latest stories and trends in the amusement industry. We also talk about some of our upcoming podcasts and events for Summer, 2008. Thanks to all of you who have stuck with us during the past three years. - CoasterRadio.com #301 - The Re-Launch
Fri, 1 Feb 2008 05:00:00 GMT
Today we're re-launching CoasterRadio.com with some all-new features, including this new blog and the return of the "New Forum Forums". To help explain it all, we produced an all new podcast episode. This is the first of three new episodes we promised our listeners for putting us over the $1000 mark during the 2007 Coaster Crew Single Riders Marathon. Enjoy! - Tom Hanks wants you to solve the mystery of the Cryptex!
Fri, 25 Jan 2008 17:46:00 GMT
There have been several puzzling clues given on this site over the past few weeks.
Many of the loyal CoasterRadio.com listeners have been using their vast knowledge to decipher the clues and figure out the true meaning.
But only the worthy will find the grail.
We have received news from Europe that might shed some light on this situation.
Tom Hanks and that French chick have found an ingenious device called a "Cryptex", and they believe it has something to do with CoasterRadio.com
Inside the Cryptex is a message.
But to open it, you must prove your worthiness by solving this riddle.
On a sunny day it came to be,
when people celebrated being free.
An amazing fountain of light and sound,
is what this young man eventually found.
The name you seek is a common one,
shared by James' Boy and Carol's son.
To use the woodwind would be mistake.
Summon the full name for "his" sake.
Click on the Cryptex to test your worthiness.
You must enter in the code and click on the top of the Cryptex to see if you are correct.
Good luck.
P.S. If you do open the Cryptex, don't be a CoasterBoy! Keep the secret to yourself and let others have fun trying to figure it out. - Clue #3

Wed, 9 Jan 2008 00:47:00 GMT - A quick note from Mike...
Fri, 5 Oct 2007 23:17:00 GMT
Hi everyone,
I'm sitting here at Gate C17 at Washington Dulles International Airport waiting for my flight to Orlando. I'm taking a few days off to head down to EPCOT to take in the Food and Wine Festival.
I can't wait to get down there and see Spaceship Earth without that ridiculous Mickey Mouse wand on top of it. That was almost as bad as when they transformed Cinderella Castle into a gaudy pink birthday cake during WDW's 25th Anniversary. YUCK!
Anyway, I've received more than a few e-mails lately from people wondering about the new show. To be honest, some of the e-mails were from some upset people. Here are some quotes....
"You guys promised us a new podcast! It's been a year? What gives?"
"You guys need to get up off your asses and start up podcast again!"
"Who cares that EB had a baby and Flava is buying a house! Start up the damn podcast already!"
And my personal favorite...
"You suck, Mike Collins!"
I completely agree.... I do suck.
It's my responsibility to start up the new show and I've been slacking.
Well, actually I haven't been slacking in real life. I've been really busy with work and life in general. But I do miss doing the show and I just have to set aside some time to get the party started again.
So, as soon as I get back from Disney, I'm going to commit to not only producing the three new CoasterRadio.com episodes we owe you, but more importantly, starting up the new show.
What's funny about the new show is that Flava, Mario, EB, Greg and I know exactly what we want it to be like. We just have to find the time to kick it off.
They're starting to board the plane now. So, I'll make you this promise:
I'll use my flight time to brainstorm some ideas for the three new CoasterRadio.com episodes. If you guys have ideas of what you want us to cover, let me know by leaving a comment here.
Have a good weekend guys,
Mike - If you donated money, your special show is on the way!
Wed, 8 Aug 2007 02:35:00 GMTWe promised a special episode of CoasterRadio.com for anyone who donated money to Team CoasterRadio and the Single Riders Marathon.
Around 60 of you donated close to $1,200.
So, those 60 listeners have been sent a super-secret link to a podcast produced just for them. It's our version of a "road-trip" podcast, produced as we drove home from Kennywood on Interstate 70 in Pennsylvania.
Keep an eye on your e-mail inbox for the episode link.
If you didn't get a message with the link, let me know by emailing me at mike(`at`)coasterradio.com.
Thanks again to everyone who supported us!
- CoasterRadio.com is BACK! (Sort-of)
Tue, 7 Aug 2007 13:33:00 GMT
We're back from the first ever Single Riders Marathon at Kennywood Park.
Despite the rain, the event was a complete success and brought in close to $4000 in donations to Give Kids The World.
Congratulations to Clint Novak, Will Holder, Katie and the rest of the Coaster Crew for coming up with such a great idea. They devoted a lot of time and energy in order to pull the event off.
In our opinion, this is exactly what coaster enthusiast groups should be doing. Hopefully this is the first of many successful charity events that they will have. We also hope that other coaster groups and websites will follow their lead.
Mario, Flava and Mike presented a check for $1,138 on behalf of the listeners and friends of CoasterRadio.com. They then got to marathon on The Racer, logging 25 rides in just over an hour.
The highlight of the weekend, was getting a chance to host The Coaster Crew's Guide to the Midway podcast. This was the first time the guys have actually done a real "theme park" podcast in 9 months.
They interviewed Kennywood GM Jerome Gibas, dished on their favorite rides and attractions, and also had a chance to try the world-famous Potato Patch fries.
You can listen to the show HERE. - CoasterRadio.com Listeners Are The Best!
Fri, 3 Aug 2007 13:31:00 GMT
I have ALWAYS said that the listeners of CoasterRadio.com are by far the best podcast audience around.
We know we can always count on the hardcore fans for support, whether it be during interactive segments of our show, contests or in this case, helping to raise money for charity.
For those of you who don't know, we have been raising money for the past two months as part of the upcoming Single Riders Marathon. All of the money raised is going to benefit Give Kids The World and Kennywood Cares.
Last night, we passed the $1000 mark! ($1095) This means that three more episodes of CoasterRadio.com are on the way. These three shows will be the "opening act" for the new podcast that will follow immediately after.
AND, anyone who has donated will receive a super-secret link to a show specifically for donors.
PLUS, Mario, Flava and I will be hosting a special edition of The Coaster Crew's Guide To The Midway when we are at Kennywood this weekend.
So, that means there are technically five more CoasterRadio.com episodes coming your way.
But, there still is time to get your donations in. We'll be accepting donations up until midnight on Friday night.
Thanks again to all of you. - What would Ari Gold from Entourage do?
Thu, 2 Aug 2007 01:11:00 GMT
I was watching an episode of HBO's Entourage a few nights ago and I came to a conclusion.... I really like the character of Ari Gold.
Sure, he's not the most honest guy in the world, but he makes things happen.
He has a way of spinning things so his clients always look good.
Now here we are, just a few days away from the charity coaster marathon and I was noticing that we had raised 45% of our goal of $2000. With two days left, unless a miracle happens, we're not gonna get there kids.
But, I'm a man who believes that you constantly have to evaluate and re-evaluate your goals. We shot for the moon with our first goal and I believe we've landed in the stars with close to $1000 in donations.
So, I've made the final goal $1000 in the hopes that any last-second donors will push us over the top.
Remember, $1000 in donations from CoasterRadio.com listeners gets three new shows.
PLUS, we'll be producing a special show just for the people who donate. I have the e-mail addresses of the listeners who have given money and I'll be sending them a secret link to a special "donors only" show.
So thank you Ari, for the inspiration.
Now let's hug it out bitches! - Guest Blogger - Nick Hutson
Thu, 2 Aug 2007 00:55:00 GMT
Hi guys! This is Nick Hutson here from the MusicalTalk Podcast. I am the "guru" who wrote the Coaster Boy musical, and I'd like to urge you to please donate money to the wonderful event that the Coaster Radio crew are doing.I'd like to ask you to remember the first time you went to a theme park. The first time you smelt the corndogs, the first time you heard the rollercoaster make its slow ascent up that lift hill, the first time you said "I can't wait to come back next year!". Now I ask you to remember that not every child in the world gets to do this. However, if you simply donate something, you will be able to provide a lot of kids with, probably, the happiest day of their life. So - this summer - treat someone else's kids to a day at your favourite theme park. You'll be glad you will. And - hey...let's try and make it up to $1000! You know what's in store if you do! Three more episodes of Coaster Radio! Let's try and make this happen. - Guest Blogger - Chunk
Wed, 1 Aug 2007 01:04:00 GMT
Hi guys, it's your 'ole pal Lawrence Cohen... of course, you know me as Chunk.
I'm here on behalf of my friends at CoasterRadio.com to BEG you to donate to TEAM COASTERRADIO as they compete in the first ever Single Riders Marathon.
Every cent these guys earn during the marathon will be sent directly to two great charities... Give Kids The World and Kennywood Cares.
They're trying to get past $1000 dollars. If they do, it will be more amazing than the time Michael Jackson came over to my house to use the bathroom.
Alright... Michael Jackson didn't come over to my house to use the bathroom. But his sister did!
For those of you who haven't given yet, come on!
Not donating to team CoasterRadio is like the time I stole my uncle Max's toupee and I glued it on my face when I was Moses in my Hebrew School play.
You not donating is like the time in in fifth grade, when I knocked my sister Edie down the stairs and I blamed it on the dog.
If you haven't given at least a buck to these charities... you're not a real Goonie... you're more like Mama Fratelli.
So what are you waiting for?!?!
Do the truffle shuffle over to your computer and donate using the ChipIn button to the left of the screen. There are only a few more days left to donate.
And remember, Goonies and CoasterRadio.com NEVER SAY DIE! - Guest Blogger - Jordan

Jordan Here, some of you may know me as the Host of the StrataCoasters Podcast, Some of you may not know me at all. That doesn't matter though, what matters is donating money to a good cause.
Over this year, I have done tons of work for charity and have visited one of the Ronald McDonald Houses. If anything, I learned to always be grateful and to help other people.
Just because someone has a disease doesn't mean they don't like the same things we do. The greatest example of that is my grandfather.
My grandpa has done Expedition Everest, he has been the greatest role model to me even though he has diabetes.
Years ago, cancer and diabetes had no cures or antidotes. Now we can slow down if not stop those diseases and its all because of donations.
So I ask you as a friend, please donate anything you have to this good cause.
There are only three days left to make your donation to Give Kids The World and Kennywood Cares! Join Team CoasterRadio!

Feeling lucky today? You should be.
There's a little girl in our daughter's school who, for privacy's sake, we'll call Mary. Mary is seven years old, and should be starting second grade soon. She has a sunny disposition, loves art and Girl Scouts, and also has a nasty form of cancer called neuroblastoma. They have been battling her disease for three years-- almost half her life. She and her family got to visit WDW and Give Kids the World this spring.
The rainbow is a painting by Mary. Her artwork shows the joy that follows her wherever she goes.
I just heard through the parent grapevine today that Mary isn't doing well. Her body has stopped responding to treatments and she may not survive much longer. As I contemplate how horrible this must be for her parents and younger sister, I also can't help but feel lucky and thankful about how healthy my own family is.
I hope that you were strong enough to get out of bed this morning. I hope that you didn't have to watch a family member suffer today. I hope you can find it in your heart to donate a couple bucks to those who aren't so lucky.
There are only four days left to make your donation to Give Kids The World and Kennywood Cares! Join Team CoasterRadio! - Mike appears on "Inside The Magic"
Sun, 29 Jul 2007 23:16:00 GMTThis week, Mike Collins was a guest on "Inside The Magic" hosted by Ricky Brigante.
He talked about the upcoming Single Riders Marathon and also spilled the beans on some aspects of the new Coaster Radio podcast.
You can listen to the podcast here - http://media.libsyn.com/media/insidethemagic/itms121.mp3
You can also discuss the show over at the ITM forums - http://www.distantcreations.com/insidethemagic/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5282
Thanks to Ricky for helping to promote the event!
We're one week away!

Sun, 29 Jul 2007 18:06:00 GMTHey to all Coaster Radio fans! I am one of the original listeners of the old podcast.
When I heard about this fundraiser, it didn't take me long to decide to donate. OK, it was one buck but hey it was money!
I felt like I had to give back to five guys who made me laugh. I thought every true listener would give at least $1... maybe more!
You may say, "I don't get paid 'til next week!" or "It's not in my budget!" ONE DOLLAR OR FIVE DOLLARS WOULD MAKE THEM HAPPY!
I know a kid, he has Cerebral Palsy. It's a condition that effects the physical part of his body, none of it mental! One of the smartest kid in his grade, and one of the funniest actors in his school.
He thinks like you and me! He gets treated like a 1st grader when somebody first meets him, but when you get to know him his just a normal guy.
He heard of Coaster Radio and fell in love with it. He was part of the forums and was treated like an equal. He told me a never to tell who he is, so he can be treated like an equal with the coaster fans.
He also told me that he has donated money and plans more.
If this kid can do it so can you! Are you a true listener?
- It's time for some guest blog writers!
Thu, 26 Jul 2007 17:45:00 GMT
We're nine days away from the Single Riders Marathon, and honestly, I'm running out of things to say to inspire you guys to donate to the cause.
So, I'd like to invite you guys to be guest bloggers on CoasterRadio.com. I'd like for YOU to write a few paragraphs to inspire your fellow listeners.
Send your inspiring words to mike(~at~)coasterradio.com. Don't forget to send along a picture that helps to make your case.
Make it funny, touching, sad, inspirational... WHATEVER. Just make it so good that people won't be able to resist. giving a few bucks.
I'll start posting your blog posts throughout the next few days. - Maybe this guy has a good idea!
Thu, 26 Jul 2007 01:20:00 GMTI was thinking about putting on a sign like this and heading out on the streets of DC to see how much money I could raise for the upcoming coaster marathon.
For those of you who don't know, CoasterRadio.com is taking part in the upcoming Single Riders Charity Marathon to raise money for Kennywood Cares and Give Kids The World.
We've challenged all of our listeners to give what they can in order to help us meet our goal.
So far, 46 of you have stepped up and donated what you could to help these great organizations.
Since our last update, we've raised over $780 dollars. Thanks so much to these friends for the latest donations:
Sharon, Steve, Linda, Clinton, Jon, Brian, Matthew, Nathan, Steve, Mariann, Thomas, John, Peter, Jerry, Andrew, Gregory, Harry, Paul, Carl, Eric, Kathy, Joe, Kathy & Chris, Thomas, Craig, Drebe, Scott, Beth and Kevin.
Heck, even JumboShrmp got into the action and made a donation. If a high school kid can donate a few bucks, so can a lot of you!
The time for guilt trips is over however. We're 10 days away from the August 5th marathon, so if you're waiting to make a dramatic last-second donation... NOW IS THE TIME!
Use the ChipIn button on this page. In less than 2 minutes you can make a secure donation that goes directly to help some needy kids.
I'm a firm believer in the old saying "what does around comes around."
Who knows, the five bucks you give today could come back to you tenfold.
- Mike appears on IOA Central Radio
Fri, 20 Jul 2007 17:24:00 GMT
Mike Collins was invited to appear on the IOA Central Radio podcast to talk about Team CoasterRadio and the Single Riders Marathon.
The show starts out with a nice interview featuring Pam Lindworth, who is the President of Give Kids The World. The interview provides great details into who we've been raising money for and why it's important.
Mike talked a bit about the new podcast project for awhile too.
You can listen to the show HERE.
As for the fundraising, we have two weeks to go and we are currently at $750. We've said that if we go past $1000, we'll bring back the show for three special "un-cut" episodes.
You can donate by using the ChipIn button on the left hand side of this blog page.
Thanks to everyone who has donated so far! - BUILD IT BIGGER on the Discovery Channel
Wed, 4 Jul 2007 01:19:00 GMTThere never seems to be very much theme park and roller coaster related content on television anymore. Back in the late 90's, it seems like every show on Discovery or the Travel Channel was about the parks.
Well, on July 10th at 10 PM (ET/PT) Sheikra, the dive-coaster at Busch Gardens Africa is going to be featured on an episode of Discovery Channel's exciting show BUILD IT BIGGER.
From Dubai to Minnesota, the show will explore amazing sites that include the Shanghai Tower in China; the Istanbul Tunnel in Turkey; Burj Dubai Skyscraper in Dubai; a casino in Las Vegas; and much more.
Here's a clip....
There is also some funny b-roll of the host freaking out. It sort of sounds like Mario when he rode Drop Zone.
- The newest member of the CoasterRadio.com Family!
Sun, 1 Jul 2007 15:59:00 GMT
Congratulations to our own E.B. and his wife Tris on the arrival of their newborn son who we'll be calling "Chuckie".
He arrived on Monday, June 25th at 8:50 AM. He weighed in at 7 pounds 10 ounces and 19.5 inches.
If you want to drop E.B. a note of congratulations, post a message here on the blog!
Congrats E.B.!!! - This lady is shocked!
Wed, 27 Jun 2007 17:14:00 GMT
Since we released last week's special podcast about Team CoasterRadio and the Single Riders Marathon, over 1,000 of you have downloaded it.
Normally I wouldn't be very excited about 1,000 downloads because back in the day, we had more listeners than that. But it does mean that a good chunk of the old CoasterRadio.com audience has hung around to see what we're doing next.
For that, we thank you. We're really excited about the new project and even more excited that we'll be starting it with such a loyal audience.
But, when I take a closer look at the number of listeners who downloaded that show versus the number of listeners who have donated money to support Team CoasterRadio in the Single Riders Marathon, I'm as shocked as that lady with the bug eyes.
According to today's talley, only 13 listeners have given money to support Team CoasterRadio as we raise money for Give Kids The World and Kennywood Cares.
13 out of 1000 is not a strong showing, but I am hoping that you guys are waiting until the event gets closer to ChipIn (ding!).
I was really hoping the photoshopped picture of Clint Novak would get you guys going, but I should of known that CoasterRadio.com listeners wouldn't fall for cheap propaganda.
Thanks to our latest donors Greg, Nick, Robert, Chris and Michelle for helping out! It is very much appreciated. We're at $170 so far, which is 8% of our $2000 goal. Some people have donated as little as $1 and others (like Michelle) have donated as much as $50!
As for the rest of you, it's time to step up! We're not asking for hundreds of dollars per listener, we're asking for one or two bucks!
Come on, you know you've got it.
Next time you go to a theme park, instead of spending $3 dollars on a Dippin' Dots, donate the money to a good cause!
Remember, all of the money we raise goes to help out some great kids and their families.
What do I have to do..... bribe you?
Fine.... what do you want? :) - A Message from E.B.
Sat, 23 Jun 2007 03:08:00 GMT
Hey, gang! EB here, checking in on the ol' blog. It's been a while since EB's been around, but I'm here to ask for your support to help out a couple of great charities.
I hope you'll all ChipIn (ding) to support the CoasterRadio team as we head up for the Kennywood Single Rider Marathon. Or, if you're shallow like me, forget the charity and just donate so we can defeat Clint and his crew of weirdos. Or, if you're still mad about the show ending, go over to their site and donate to help Clint just to spite us. Whatever your motivation, toss a couple of bucks in to the pot to help.
If you'd like to go above and beyond, donate now and then show up at Kennywood to support the gang as they ride. It'll mean a lot to the fellas, and to me, too, since I won't be there to laugh as Flava pukes after his second cycle on the Thunderbolt and I'll need someone to be there to tease him for me.
Why can't I make it? No, not because I have a heart of stone and don't want to help poor sick little children. It's because when CoasterRadio starts up a new podcast, a baby is born into the EB family. It's like a rule or something (just go back and listen to episode 101 of the old show). So the wife will have a new baby popping out any day now and I'll need to stay close to home to be there to catch the lil' runt when he squirts out.
Speaking of the new podcast, we've been working for a while on getting it ready, and since the new show is going to have a totally new vibe, it's been taking some time to get all the elements together.
- Clint Novak is Laughing At You!
Tue, 19 Jun 2007 16:41:00 GMT
The fundraising has started for the August 5th Single Riders Marathon!
It's still early, but Coaster Radio listeners are making a strong showing!
Thanks to Joel, Peter, Thomas, Drebe, Harry, Ronn, Jessica and Greg for donating so far.
Will Holder from "Team In The Loop" has even stepped up and made a donation! Could it be that he has finally seen the light and is defecting from the grasp of Clint Novak?
Speaking of Clint, I'm afraid to say that he is laughing at all of you CoasterRadio.com listeners who haven't donated yet. He's probably sitting in the "In The Loop" studios, wearing his propeller beanie and counting the days until he can claim that he is victorious over CoasterRadio.com.
If you think he was happy when we quit podcasting, imagine how happy he will be if "Team In The Loop" is victorious over "Team Coaster Radio" during the Single Riders Coaster Marathon!
Of course, this is a charity event first and foremost. But it's also a battle for bragging rights! So click on the ChipIn button! Let's show the world that CoasterRadio.com wasn't a podcast for "posers".
Remember, all of the money goes to two wonderful charities - Give Kids The World and Kennywood Cares.
Keep your eyes on this blog, because in a few days you will hear inspirational messages from Flava, EB, Greg and Mario. They will remind you why it's important to donate and in the words of CoasterRadio.com listener Jeff from Las Vegas....
"Beat Clint and his Cronies!!!!!" - Happy Memorial Day
Sat, 26 May 2007 14:45:00 GMT
For people who like theme parks, Memorial Day signals the unofficial start of summer. After this weekend, parks across the country will be open daily. Here at the Collins' household, we're getting ready for a Saturday night BBQ with the family. While I was getting the grill ready, I decided to pull out our old "Memorial Day Barbeque" episode from the first season of CoasterRadio.com.
I think this was our favorite episode out of all the ones we ever did because it was simply five friends, hanging out with some food and drink.
I know that the "new show" we've been talking about has been a long time in the making, but there just might be some clues in this old BBQ episode that point to what the new show will be like.
Hmmm... that's sort of like how they drop hints on ABC's "Lost".
- Review of Griffon at Busch Gardens Europe
Sun, 20 May 2007 13:38:00 GMT
I had a chance to check out Griffon at Busch Gardens Europe and posted a review for you guys. It's a great addition to BGE and their first roller coaster since Apollo's Chariot in 1999. It also gives the park three B&M coasters.
Anyone who visits the park will be really impressed with how they integrated the new ride and the surrounding buildings into the existing area. It looks like it's always been there.
Like I said in the review though, the most eye-popping thing about this coaster are the trains with 10-across seating. Wow. I saw pictures of the trains before heading out there, but actually climbing aboard is an experience.
Here's the Review....
- Back from Disneyland
Sat, 28 Apr 2007 15:29:00 GMTSorry for the lack of updates lately.
We've all been really swamped with work and I've been doing a lot of traveling lately.
Molly and I just returned from a trip to Los Angeles where we got to spend a few days checking out the city.
We did all of the typical Hollywood things like visiting Hollywood Blvd and seeing a taping of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
But of course, we spent a few days the Disneyland Resort.
I'm going to put up a review of the parks and several of the rides (and maybe even record a quick podcast with the guys to talk about it), but let me just say quickly that it was a really great experience being there.
As a East Coast kid, I grew up only knowing about Walt Disney World in Orlando. So it was great to finally visit the park that started it all.
Seeing the original Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion and Jungle Cruise was incredible. Riding exclusive Disneyland rides like the Matterhorn and Indiana Jones was really cool too.
I have mixed feelings about California Adventure, but we did get to see Disney's Electrical Parade there, so I was happy about that.
We stayed at the Grand Californian and our balcony was actually "inside" Disney's California Adventure! It was really cool to look out over the park at night and see the different attractions lit up. It was also interesting to walk out on the balcony in the mornings and watch the crews prepare the park for the day.
I'll follow up with more about the trip later.
In other news.... Flava, EB and I had dinner together before I left and talked more about the next phase of this crazy project. If you're still subscribed to the CoasterRadio.com feed, there might be something for you there soon. :)
- CoasterRadio.com Named "Best of the Web"
Sat, 24 Mar 2007 00:37:00 GMT
The CoasterRadio.com podcast was selected by the Norwich Evening News (in Norwich, UK) as the "Pick of the Podcasts" in their "Best of the Web" section.
Simon Parkin writes that "rollercoasters divide opinion - you either love 'em, or you turn green at the very thought. If you're in the first category, you'll no doubt love CoasterRadio.com."
You can read the entire article here.
- The CoasterRadio.com Website Returns!
Sat, 10 Mar 2007 22:13:00 GMTWe have an updated version of the CoasterRadio.com site on-line now!
We went through the old site and got rid of some of the things we won't be using anymore. We also moved hosting providers to set us up better for whatever we decide to do next.
There are a few new features on the CR site such as trivia, content-specific web links and news updates. Plus, this blog has been integrated into the site as well.
We'll be adding more content over the next several weeks. We'll also be adding new trip reports and reviews as the summer season rolls on.
By the way, I'm heading to Disneyland in April. So you know I'll have some pictures to share!
- Disney's "Living Character Initiative"
Wed, 7 Mar 2007 03:32:00 GMT
When Walt Disney introduced Audio-Animatronics into his Disneyland attractions, people were blown away. Imagine what it must have been like the first time people saw birds singing in the Tiki Room or elephants splashing around the Jungle Cruise.
Disney Imagineers have been raising the bar for Audio-Animatronics ever since. Throughout the years we've seen them do amazing things at Disney parks across the globe.
But this week, I think they raised the bar once again.
"Muppet Mobile Labs" has been rolling through the streets of Disney's California Adventure this week. It is a free-roaming AA show featuring Beaker and Professor Honeydew.
A few years ago, Imagineering created a free-roaming dinosaur that walked around Disney's Animal Kingdom. That was impressive. But this time around, the two muppets are actually able to have a conversation with Disney park guests. The best part is, people are looking around for a puppeteer, but there isn't one around!

Fri, 2 Mar 2007 02:59:00 GMTI was surfing the web the other day and found something so amazing, it made me wish we were still producing the show...because I wanted to talk about it and dissect it on-air.
Anyone who is a longtime listener of CoasterRadio.com knows that the five of us are students of movies from the 80's.
We love 'em. We could probably have entire conversations just using quotes from 80's movies.
So when I saw the music video for "Sweep The Leg" by No More Kings, it made me happy. It's the perfect tribute to The Karate Kid. It stars (and is directed by) William Zabka who played Johnny. It also features the bad-ass Martin Kove who played Sensei Kreese and for some reason, Mr. Belding makes an appearance. But if you're patient and watch until the end, you get a cameo by the Karate Kid himself... Ralph Macchio.
I like that these guys are using the music video to pay tribute to the movie. And if you think about it, the band is smart to use some 80's nostalgia to build some buzz.
Hmmmmmm.......
- Bryan's Alien Theme Park Is Getting Traction!
Fri, 16 Feb 2007 01:08:00 GMTDuring one of last year's shows, we invited a guy named Bryan Temmer on CoasterRadio.com. He had e-mailed us a few weeks before and told us that he was working on building a theme park.
He told us that he couldn't give us many details, but that he'd be willing to give our show a behind the scenes look at what it takes to get an independent theme park off the ground.
When I told the guys that Bryan was coming on, they were very skeptical. They originally thought it was someone from one of the other podcasts pulling our leg, much like how fans of Howard Stern call other radio shows and shout "Baba-Booey!"
But it turns out that Bryan and his dream of an Alien-themed amusement park are for real.
As I was surfing Screamscape today, I came across this article about Bryan's progress!
As you can see, there are links to two articles, including one that gives credit to the interview we did on CoasterRadio.com. It also features some artwork from the "Alien Apex" theme park.
I took some time today to re-listen to that episode. It's fun to hear the skepticism in our voices as we quiz Bryan about his park and his motives. But he's making progress.
EB reminded me today that Bryan offered us lifetime admission and a place to record CoasterRadio.com if the park were ever to be built. I wonder if the offer is still valid?
One of the things I liked about CoasterRadio.com is that we could interview guys like Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde one week and guys like Bryan Temmer the next.
Congrats to Bryan! - An update from your friends at CoasterRadio.com
Sat, 10 Feb 2007 23:09:00 GMT
It's been a long time since we've posted an update here at CoasterRadio.com!
I'm not sure why, but when I checked the iTunes Travel Podcast Top 100 rankings today, CoasterRadio.com was #88. Why are we ranked that high? We haven't put out a new show in over 3 months! I don't get it. The show is beating that chick who used to host RocketBoom! (But I always thought EB was more entertaining than her anyway.)
All of the guys are doing well and we've been enjoying time away from the whole podcast/coaster scene. To be honest with you, it was getting a little creepy there at the end. There were a few listeners who were taking the whole "fan" thing a little too far.
That's part of the reason that we decided to put an end to the forums and the website.
The other reason is that we're finally starting to talk about our next podcast project. I've had dinner with Mario and Flava recently and we came up with some great ideas for a new show. We're planning to get all of the guys together sometime this month to talk more about it. We might even record something to add to the old CoasterRadio.com feed.
The new show will be less work-intensive and hopefully a lot more fun for a wider audience. The CoasterRadio.com audience was fantastic, but it was very niche. We're going after a lot more people with this new show.
Keep checking this blog because I'll come back every now and then to give you updates on what's next.
If you want to talk with other CoasterRadio.com fans, you can visit the CoasterRadio.com Yahoo Group that Drebe set up.
Talk with you soon!
Mike - CoasterRadio.com #228 - Series Finale
Sun, 5 Nov 2006 23:20:00 GMT
Dear Listeners of CoasterRadio.com,Thank you so much for being a part of our lives during the past two years. It was a great experience producing the show and we couldn't have done it without the support of the thousands of you who came along for the ride every week.
Working on this show reminded us of how much fun it is to go to an amusement park with your friends and forget about everyday life for awhile. We hope that listening to this podcast did the same thing for you.
There were a lot of great moments both on-air and off-air, but here are some of the highlights:
* We produced 80 original shows (about 48 hours of podcasting!) * We produced 13 on-location shows at The Walt Disney World Resort, Holiday World, Hersheypark, Six Flags Over Georgia, Kennywood, Busch Gardens Europe, Knoebels, Paramount's Kings Dominion, Six Flags Great Adventure and Dorney Park. * We were the only non-official podcast invited to the grand opening of Expedition Everest at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom. * We were Commissioned by the State of Pennsylvania Office of Tourism to produce a "road trip podcast" to four of its amusement parks. * We interviewed Disney Imagineers Joe Rohde (Expedition Everest), Eric Jacobson (Rock 'n' Roller Coaster) and Mike Lentz (Mission: Space). * We interviewed Holiday World's Will Koch and several of the designers from The Gravity Group (The Voyage / Hades). * We were featured on Adam Curry and iTunes' Podfinder podcast. * We were featured in a July 2006 article about theme park podcasting in the amusement trade publication Funworld.
All of these things happened because we were able to point to an large, active and loyal group of listeners. Without you guys, the show would have never taken off.
This week, we present our series finale. It clocks-in around two hours long because we wanted to get in as many of your e-mails, voicemails and questions as possible.
We also have a few surprises in there for you as well, including an original song written for the end of our show by Deidre Rodman of the Lascivious Biddies.
Even though this is the end of the weekly version of CoasterRadio.com, we're hoping to keep this site alive to continue the friendships we have made while doing the show. We'll probably even produce new "special" episodes of the show during holidays and other times when it makes sense. So make sure you stay subscribed to our RSS feed!
We're also working on a new podcast that will hopefully premiere sometime in 2007. While it won't be strictly about coasters, I'm sure we won't be able to go very long without mentioning them once in awhile.
Thanks again for listening! We'll see you at the parks!
Your friends, Mike, Mario, Flava, EB & Greg
- CoasterRadio.com #227 - Halloween at the Parks
Sun, 29 Oct 2006 23:35:00 GMT
This week, we had originally scheduled our Series Finale. But so many of you have been sending in messages and other things for our final show, we decided to bump it back one week so we could fit everything in.So for this week's Bonus Episode, we're going to talk about our last-second trip to "Hersheypark In The Dark". It was the first time in over two years that we've been to an amusement park without taking along all of the audio equipment.
We'll also be joined by Mike and Greg's brother Ryan, who spent the weekend at Busch Gardens Europe's Howl-O-Scream. He'll tell us what the event was like from a "General Public" perspective.
After the show, join us in our forums to talk about your opinions.

- CoasterRadio.com #226 - Accommodations
Sun, 22 Oct 2006 22:14:00 GMT
We've all had the experience of standing in line at a park and having to wait an extra cycle while a disabled guest is loaded into the row for which you were waiting. Most of us have no problem with this. But have you ever wondered how the parks decide who gets to jump to the front of the line and who doesn't? What constitutes a reasonable accommodation?
This week, we'll talk about the different physical and mental challenges that people face and how it affects their trip to the theme park. We'll also talk about how some people try to abuse and cheat the system.
After the show, join us in our forums to talk about your opinions.

- CoasterRadio.com #225 - Our 2006 Tribute to Cast Members!
Sun, 15 Oct 2006 22:40:00 GMT
We've always said that Cast Members in a theme park can make or break your trip. They're the hardest working people at the parks. So, the least we can do is dedicate one of our last shows to them and their stories.
Thanks to our friends at StupidGuestTricks.com, we have some fantastic stories about what Cast Members have to put up with each and every day.
This week, we're joined by Mike Collins' wife Molly, who was a Cast Member at the Walt Disney World resort in the mid-90's.
- CoasterRadio.com #224 - Real Ghosts at the Park?
Mon, 9 Oct 2006 03:24:00 GMT
If you're a fan of theme parks, October is one of the best times of year.Halloween is right around the corner, and most parks are open for special "scare-fests" where you can ride all day and scream all night.
Most parks have to create artificial ghosts, but it turns out one park doesn't have to. Six Flags Over Georgia recently played host to the Atlanta-based Ghost Hounds, who spent several hours after the park closed searching for signs from the beyond.
Guess what... they found something.
This week, Christy Poore from Six Flags Over Georgia joins us to talk about what they found. She'll also tell us about last week's "Ticket to Terror" promotion where 28 lucky guests volunteered to eat a live Hissing Madagascar Cockroach in order to skip to the front of the line of their new roller coaster, Goliath.
We'll also have a series of reports from EB, who spent the weekend at Knoebels Phoenix Phall Phunfest. It's one of the most anticipated coaster enthusiasts of the year and EB was there! He'll give us his unqiue spin on what he saw.
Plus, we'll tell you about our upcoming shows, all leading up the the big series finale on October 30th.
After the show, join us in our forums to talk about your opinions.

- CoasterRadio.com #222 - Mario Faces His Fears On TV (Video)
Sun, 24 Sep 2006 15:18:00 GMT
Back in December of last year, we did a show about Extreme Rides where we talked about the different attractions that truly frighten us.One of the best stories to come out of that show is when we talked about how Mario had to ride Drop Zone on a cold, rainy April day...several times... alone!
We were all working on a Washington, DC based television show for kids and this particular episode was about new thrill rides. Drop Zone at Paramount's Kings Dominion had just opened, so they invited the host of our show to give their new ride a try.
Mario was the host of the show, but is very afraid of heights. However, he but on a brave face and took the ride on.
But during television shoots, you often have to videotape the same action several times from different angles to make sure you have enough footage to complete the segment. So, Mario had to ride Drop Zone four or five times for us to get all the shots we needed.
Also, since the show was produced daily, we had no choice but to shoot on a rainy Friday afternoon, before the park opened to the public the next day. That helped to add to the fear.
This week, we present a video podcast where you finally get to see what that segment looked like!
Don't forget to nominate your favorite park or attraction in our 2006 CoasterRadio.com Awards!
- CoasterRadio.com #221 - The EB and Mike Morning Zoo Returns!

Back by popular demand, it's the EB and Mike Morning Zoo!OK, the guys aren't exactly back doing a duo-show because of popular demand..... Flava, Greg and Mario were away this week.
But this week, EB and Mike get to finally tell you guys about their trips to Las Vegas.
They'll talk about the city, the casinos, the lights and of course... the thrill rides.
They'll talk about:
* X-Scream, Insanity: The Ride and Big Shot at the Stratosphere. * The Roller Coaster at New York, NY * Speed: The Ride at the Sahara * Canyon Blaster at Circus Circus * Star Trek: The Experience at The Las Vegas Hilton * Desperado at Buffalo Bill's.

- CoasterRadio.com #220 - Has The Mega-Hype Spoiled Us?
Mon, 11 Sep 2006 01:45:00 GMT
This is the time of year when many of the different theme parks and amusement parks all over the country announce their new attractions and additions for the 2007 season.During this week's show, we'll talk about two of the most recent announcements:
Maverick at Cedar Point - The Point's 17th coaster will be a terrain-hugging ride that features a 105-foot drop at 95-degrees, three inversions and a 70 mph launch through a dark tunnel
Griffon at Busch Gardens Europe - The 205-foot floorless dive coaster will be the tallest ride of it's kind anywhere in the world. It will feature a 205-foot, 90-degree drop, two Immelmann loops, a second 130-foot dive and a water splashdown effect.
These rides sound pretty cool. right?
Well, there are some members of the coaster enthusiast community who aren't very happy. They expected more and are disappointed that we're not seeing more height and speed out of this year's crop of announcements.
This week, we'll talk about the hype surrounding new and future announcements. Can anything satisfy us anymore?
We're also looking for stories from cast members about their time working at a park. If you have a funny or shocking story from your days on the job at a theme park, e-mail us at feedback [@] coasterradio.com.
Don't forget to nominate your favorite park or attraction in our 2006 CoasterRadio.com Awards!

Mon, 3 Jul 2006 19:53:00 GMT
On this week's show, we'll celebrate the 4th of July by shooting off some of the lamest legal fireworks that the Commonwealth of Virginia allows. Our fireworks display isn't gonna be like what you'll see over Cinderella Castle, but it's better than nothing. We'll also fire up the deep fryer and pay homage to the greatest theme park food ever made - Fried Oreos!
Yes, we know this is a theme park podcast and not a cooking show. But when we were at Holiday World a few months ago, we were blown away by this strange dessert. So, after a lot of testing in the kitchen, we have come up with what we believe is a very close version of our own.
We'll also bring back Bryan Temmer to the show. Long time listeners will remember Bryan from a show we did last November. Bryan is a normal guy, with a normal job and a normal family. But he has a dream that is far from normal.
Bryan has a dream of building his own theme park and he's making progress! We'll check in with Bryan and find out what's been happening since we spoke with him six months ago.

We'll also talk about an article in last week's Washington Post about how several Six Flags America employees were asked to cut their hair in order to comply with the park's theming.

Mon, 12 Jun 2006 03:32:00 GMT
In the mid-1990's, Mike's wife Molly worked at Walt Disney World as a Skipper on the Jungle Cruise and as a Buccaneer on Pirates of the Caribbean. We've been trying to get her on the show for over a year and this week, she finally gave in! We'll grill her about her days working at The Mouse and what it was like to work on these two world famous attractions. She'll even tell us the story about her encounter with the ghost who haunts Pirates of the Carribbean! To help get you in the mood for this week's show, we're offering a video podcast that includes footage of an actual trip on the Jungle Cruise with Molly at the helm. On this week's show, we'll give you another clue in our Soundwave Contest. We'll also tell you about the first entries we've received in our Spread The Word contest. One of our listeners got us some airplay on a national BBC radio show! After the show, join us in our forums to talk about your opinions. As most of you know, CoasterRadio.com is not our full-time job. Sometimes, the show has to take a back-seat when professional disasters strike! Throughout the past two months, Mike Collins has been working on a major television project at his job. Earlier this week, the storage system that held all of his video files crashed. So, it's taken a lot of extra hours to bring the files back online so that the project stays on schedule. Unfortunately, this means that we were unable to produce a new show this week. But, we're going to re-post one of our most talked about shows - the Podcast from Kingda Ka's Grand Opening at Six Flags Great Adventure. This was one of the most technically demanding shows from Season One. Not only did we have a live call from Sheikra's Media Day at Busch Gardens Africa in Tampa, FL, we also had an on-ride segment where EB rode Kingda Ka during the show. For newer listeners, this is a show you might not have heard before. But for long-time listeners, we want to make downloading the podcast worth your while. So, we'll also include the clip for our first Soundwave Contest of the year. If you check out the end of the show, you'll hear an easter egg that contains the clip. The first clue will be given out during next week's show. After the show, join us in our forums to talk about your opinions. You can also record your thoughts on the CoasterRadio.com Voicemail Line at 206-339-RIDE (206-339-7433). Let us know what you think by e-mailing us at feedback[@]coasterradio.com. It's a week of celebration here at CoasterRadio.com!
First of all, we're celebrating our 50th episode. But more importantly, we're celebrating the Grand Opening of Expedition Everest by podcasting from Disney's Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
Expedition Everest features a perilous journey aboard a runaway train through the Himalayan mountains. Adventurous riders push deep into the lair of the feared yeti, guardian of the forbidden mountain.
Along the way, they encounter torn tracks, spiral backwards through the fog into an ice cavern and dart into and out of the mountain in a high-speed adventure.
CoasterRadio.com was on hand for all of the Grand Opening festivities. This week's show features:
Our review of Expedition Everest along with on-ride audio
An interview with Disney Imagineer and Expedition Everest Project Manager Mike Lentz
An interview with Walt Disney World's Vice President of Operations, Lee Cockrell
An interview with Disney World Creative Writer and Trivia Master Greg Ehrbar
Reviews of Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show, Soarin' and Mission: Space
And behind the scenes stories about what it's like attending a Disney media event.

Mon, 3 Apr 2006 03:45:00 GMT- If there's one thing we love more than theme parks and roller coasters, it's the movies of the 1980's. Throughout the past year, we've often said that it would be fun to stop work on CoasterRadio.com and switch to doing a show about 80's movies. This week, we present The 80's Movie Podcast. Each week, we're going to talk about movies like The Goonies, Back To The Future, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Revenge of the Nerds, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and Ghostbusters. Is this an April Fools joke? Is it for real? You'll have to listen to find out.
- CoasterRadio.com #148 - 10 Things I Hate About You
Mon, 27 Mar 2006 04:20:00 GMT
We think Theme Parks are a blast. We're pretty sure you agree with us because you probably wouldn't be a listener of this podcast if you didn't. But there are some really annoying things that always seem to happen whenever you visit a park these days. These things aren't awful enough to make you want to cancel your theme park trip, but they are annoying and have the ability to add frustration to your theme park day.
With the help of our listeners, we have compiled a list of the Top 10 most annoying things that happen when you visit a theme park. We're calling it "10 Things I Hate About You". This list isn't specific to one park or one theme park chain, but if you're a regular theme park visitor, odds are one or more of these things have affected you.

- CoasterRadio.com #147 - Rollercoaster (The Movie)
Mon, 20 Mar 2006 03:55:00 GMT
Back in the late 70's, people were crazy for disaster films. There were movies about earthquakes, airplane disasters, war and even one about roller coasters. In 1977, Universal Studios released a film about a madman (played by Timothy Bottoms) who was crisscrossing the country to set off bombs at amusement parks. He wanted the theme park chains to give him one million dollars or he would continue to blow up roller coasters and dark rides. It turns out that the only guy smart enough to stop him was a chain-smoking safety inspector (played by George Segal) who gets on the case after the madman destroys a coaster that he personally inspected.
The plot is a bit laughable, but most theme park fans watch this movie for the scenes that were shot at Paramount's Kings Dominion, Six Flags Magic Mountain and the now defunct Ocean View Park. Three of the major on-ride sequences take place on PKD's Rebel Yell, SFMM's Revolution and The Rocket at Ocean View Park.
On this week's show, we'll be joined by a Washington, DC film commentator who will give us his professional take on the film. We'll also give you the scoop on the fun things to look for the next time you watch the film.
If you do happen to own a copy of the 1998 DVD release, you can now download a full-length commentary where we point out interacting facts and trivia about the movie in real-time. Such as:
Who shot the film's producer Jennings Lang and why? What's the deal with the singing mushrooms at PKD? What is Vitamin F and how does it relate to SFMM?

- CoasterRadio.com #146 - Hitting The Parks Alone
Mon, 13 Mar 2006 03:42:00 GMT
Theme parks are designed as a place where friends and family can go and have a good time together. They really aren't set up for people to visit alone. For instance, there aren't any one-seater roller coasters out there. Most times if you're by yourself, there's always that huge empty seat next to you.
So, while most people would never consider visiting a theme park alone, there are a lot of advantages to taking a trip by yourself.
On this week's show, we'll talk about the pros and cons of hitting the parks alone.
Next week, join us as we talk about the Universal Studios 1977 classic "RollerCoaster". We'll be joined by a Washington, DC film commentator and we'll give you the scoop on the fun things to look for the next time you watch the film.
If you do happen to own a copy of the 1998 DVD release, you'll be able to listen to a full-length commentary where we point out interacting facts and trivia about the movie in real-time. If anyone actually does this, we'll be amazed.

- CoasterRadio.com #145 - From The Forums....
Mon, 6 Mar 2006 04:30:00 GMT
We had a topic lined up for this week's show, but a post on the CoasterRadio.com Forums caught our eye. So, we decided to bump our planned show and talk about the debate. One of our listeners was looking into joining ACE, the American Coaster Enthusiasts. While he was reading their code of conduct, he came upon one part of the code that said...
"When interacting with the media, members are expected to speak enthusiastically about all parks and roller coasters. While members may have strong opinions about parks and roller coasters, they are to avoid negative criticism to the media."
The listener was upset by this because he feels that he should be able to voice his opinion however he wants, whenever he wants. He brought the topic up on our forum, so now we're bringing it up on the show.
After the show, join us in our forums to talk about your opinions. You can also record your thoughts on the CoasterRadio.com Voicemail Line at 206-339-RIDE (206-339-7433).

- CoasterRadio.com #144 - The Reel Design Contest
Mon, 27 Feb 2006 04:20:00 GMT
This is the time of year when all of the different Hollywood blockbusters are being honored at the various award ceremonies. What does this have to do with theme parks and roller coasters? Well, many of the best theme park attractions in history have based upon popular films.Back To The Future, Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye, Jaws, Star Tours, Kongfrontation, Superman Escape, Terminator 2: 3D, Jurassic Park, Men In Black, The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman, Revenge Of The Mummy and countless other attractions have had their story lines adapted from popular movies.
For the past month, listeners of CoasterRadio.com have been submitting their ideas for a blockbuster theme park attraction based upon a blockbuster movie. We call it our Reel Design Contest.
We narrowed the submissions down to 10 finalists and you'll hear all of them on this week's show. The winner will receive two one day admission tickets to the Walt Disney World Resort courtesy of MapleLeafTickets.com.
After the show,
